There is a big Garrod clan in the town where I live now. Don't know them personally but their reputation precedes them. lol

Thanks Annie & Merry. I think there may have been two branches of the Garrod/Gorrod clan in London in the 1800's in the 1840s/50s My lot were in St Pancras but I am sure they must have been linked to the Bethnal Green bunch. The infant mortality figures brings it home, though.

Bless them, hope the youngest 3 survived way into adulthood. I know it happened so much back then but I find it so heartbreaking. Can't imagine the pain of loosing one child, let alone 6. : (

It really brings them to life doesn't it?? Henry and Elizabeth Garrod went on to have another two children after the daughter they had from the 1895 confinement - they are still in Bethnal Green in 1901. Merry

Hi, Brian, September 17th 1895 Mrs Elizabeth Garrod 39 White street wants recommendation for London hospital maternity certificate. Husband, Henry, a labourer [aged 40 years] who only has occasional work. Four children living out of 10 confinements. Has paid for 8 confinements. Helped by London hospital on 2 occasions. One boy aged 16 earns 8/- a week as an errand boy. Rent 14/- a week, reduced to 2/- by lodgers. Lived there 13years. Wife aged 37 years used to do table trimming work. Not able to follow it now as it affected her eyes. Earns 1/- to 4/- a week at washing. Application granted.

I would be interested in what it says about the Garrods !

Hi, Christine, This is the Brant entry September 20th 1892 Mrs Eliza Brant, 10 Wood street, re convalescent letter for child Ethel Annie, age 9, recovering from Quinsy. Two children have been treated by the parish for fever and are now away for change of air at convalescent home at the expense of the parish. Woman is a scrubber in the Whitechapel infirmary. Husband now follows the calling of a drunkard and 'goes on dreadful' in the place he would call his home. Was a postman for 23 years and received much consideration from the officials . Before final dismissal they took away his stripes , reduced his wages, took away his uniform, gave him back all these things and at last were obliged to give him the sack. Referred to C.O.S. Woman appears respectable and healthy. I wonder if the postman being given the sack was written tongue in cheek?

I wonder what Sarah's maiden name was. Since she came from Fincham, I may have seen her records when I had the privilege of looking through the Parish Registers years ago, when my father was Rector of Fincham! Christine PS I'm intrigued by the BRANT ones... I was doing some research for a choir friend with that name, but his family came mainly from Lincolnshire/Yorks.

Wow, Sarah gave more or less her right age! Very unusual, even when there's not a big age gap. Good for her

September 19th 1892 Wedding at 12.30 between Othello Green [aged 23] and widow Sarah McNally [aged 41, looks over 50!] She maybe Green by name but her complexion is decidedly yellow. As venture number 2 is a hairdresser he'll be competant to supply her with a wig in due time . Meanwhile she'll give him many a wigging. I do not admire this verdant batchelors taste but every eye forms it's own beauty. lol. Not very christian! The worrying thing is that I have Mcnallys in my tree, but they were from Camberwell so hopefully Sarah is no relation!

OOOh, there was a thread about this a few months back, but I can't remember the name of it............ Go on....type one of the less flattering remarks (pretty please?!)! I seem to remember some were quite funny!! Merry
