Does anyone know where abouts Gloucester Buildings in St George in the East, London is? My gg grandfather was found dead there and I'd like to locate the area, but can't find it anywhere. I've googled and that doesn't help. The sub district was St George and St John, but still there doesn't appear to be a street named Gloucester Buildings. Would appreciate any help. Thanks. Kirsten

Well on his death certificate it says he died at 20 Gloucester Buildings. I've been a website that does Victorian streets, and it's known as it there.

I googled and found a page about 1891 census, giving this info 'Page 252 of fiche 284: West side of Providence St, north side of Ellen St from Providence St to Berner St. East side of Berner St from Ellen St to Fairclough St and west side of Berner st from Fairclough St to Everard St. All Boyd St, All Gloucester Buildings, east side of Back Church Lane from Everard St to Fairclough St, north side of Fairclough St from Back Church Lane to Christian St, and south side of Fairclough St from Back Church Lane to Providence St.' With luck, some of these streets should still exist and you should be able to get a reasonable idea of where Glous. Bldgs was. nell

tell me the website and i'll see i can see Gloucester Buildings, and then compare it to a modern map. Would assume the buildings were knocked down at some point, but when ?????

It is in the St John the Evangelist parish and that church is in Golding Street formerly Grove Street, Don't know if you can pin point it from that.

Jean, thanks for that. I'm looking at my A - Z right now.

There's no where near there that has a similar name, so I'm going to assume that it was an area/place near Boyd Street and Back Church Lane.

Kirsten there is another website that list missing Londo Streets but for the life of me can't recall it.... if i can it might be useful... will keep looking. The one I'm thinking of actually tells you where the missing street was !!!

Shelli4 Report 14 Jan 2006 21:53

Kirsten, right will try and explain this .... http://www.motco(.)com/map/81006/ the above link is for 1862 Gloucester building is in teh middle at the bottom of the map. Gloucestr building are just above Henry St, Everard St and the one just of the bottom of the map is Ellen St. (You can move the map south by clicking on south on the left of map.) Also just to the right of Gloucester Buildings is Christian St. Commercial rd is to the north. **Link missing sent as PM cos it sent thread funny!!!!** The above link is for todays map Gloucester building aern't there neither is Henry Street or Everard St. However, Ellen St, Christian st and Commercial rd are all on teh map so you can pinpoint appox area. Does that make sense? and more to the point can you follow my ramblings?
