Shelli4 Report 16 Jan 2006 23:16

I am trying to find JOHN COULBY from Claypole Lincs. His ages varies from the two census I have … 1861. RG9 390 F41 Pg17 1 Cow Lane Rotherhithe John Coulby head mar 27 lab in pickling yard Lincolnshire Claypole Sarah Ann Coulby wife 25 Mountfield Sussex Thomas Wm Coulby son 9mo Surrey Rotherhithe Sarah dies 1869 1871 RG10 643 F104 Pg17 9 Acorn Place Rotherhithe John Coulby Head 39 Lab Lincolnshire Claypole Thomas Coulby Son 11 scholar Surrey Rotherhithe John dies in 1872 I do have this cert but am ashamed to say I can’t find it at the moment… nor any of the Coulby certs... All together in one file which is missing :((( So the 1861 says he was born 1834, while the 1871 says 1832. My problem is the only John Coulby I can find that vaguely fits the bill is ... John Coulby serv born 1830 Holme Lincs. HO107/2135 F308 Pg8 Now this is another two yrs difference. Could this be my John, I know age on census vary, but would appreciate other people thoughts. Also the place of birth differs, Claypole and Holme are either side of Newark, so a fair bit apart. I am trying very hard to prove this is my John Coulby as I know for a fact there is another John Coulby who marries a Sarah. But he was born 1825 Ashby according to 1861, Rg9/2321 F20 Pg10 So do you think is the John born in Holmes mine??

Hi Shelli, My parents live near a village called Holme and thats in Cambs, but have just googled and lots of Holme names come up in Lincs, which is obviously where Claypole is.. Hope this helps Debs x

Shelli4 Report 16 Jan 2006 23:25

Debs thanks yes you're right. There is a Claypole and a Holme in Lincs.. it just that they are a way apart So wondered if place of birth would vary that much..

 Debbie

Debbie Report 16 Jan 2006 23:29

Shelli, I suppose it would depend on where they were living, let me re read your thread... Back in a mo Debs x

People's ages and birthplaces can vary on different censuses. I suppose you could check for other John Coulbys born at the alternative place on censuses too to see if there were two of them, or just the one. nell

Nell I know, have tried every variation of Coulby i can think of. Am so stumped with this family... can't find John marriage to Sarah anywhere, so am trying to take it back with out marriage cert. Am really clasping at straws here, so thought I;d get other peoples views on it. what do you reckon to the John Coby i just found?

Debbie Report 16 Jan 2006 23:35

Shout at me if im wrong here but: First of all we dont know where he was for the first 30 ish (depends on birth yr) years of his life, maybe his parents moved, not sure again where his parents where from? Also as registration wasnt compulsory he maybe wasnt registered at all. Have you looked on IGI and found anything? His death cert will only give the age that the person who registered his death thought he was, I bet you find them tomorrow too! Debs x

Can't give you proof, but my opinion for what it is worth is that the Holme John Coulby is not your man....he is down as servant as relationship to head.....looks more like an ennumerator mistake with the ditto marks under the surname. Also think that the Coby one is much more likely, the image for the other transcribed above as Claypool are very similar and on this and 1861 Claypole and pool seem to be transposed.....have you seen Dixon Coulby, from Claypole/pool in 1851/61 as an example? Helen

Shelli4 Report 16 Jan 2006 23:41

Deb according to the two census I have definately found him, he states Claypole as his place of birth. I can recall his death cert was registered by his neighbour, so his age is quite possibly wrong. There is a John Colby on IGI, 05 AUG 1832 Claypole, Lincoln, England parents George and Mattina But without finding him on 1851, or 1841 preferably with his parents. I can't prove that one on IGI is him. Can't find his marriage anywhere. That would give me his fathers name.

Shelli, I will have a look on the 1851 too, though doubt I wil find anything that you have not already seen, though must say I tend to agree with Nell on this one. Debs x

Nell Just looked and I see what you mean about Dixon Coulby. On 1861 there is actually two Dixons one from Claypole and the other from Claypool I think my money is on teh Coby one.. hes living at South Cllingham which isn't far Newark. I have no trouble with the Coulby once they are in London, as we're the only one just about... but tracing them in Lincs is a nightmare, as thats where the name orginates!!!!

Shelli4 Report 16 Jan 2006 23:57

Debs I have that cert... was SO certain it was mine. Sleaford isn't far. Even managed to make the name on Thomas Williams birth 1860 fit.... But thats an another branch of Coulbys. My sarah is Sarah Selmes....... and if you find I'l love you forever and a day. Hvae been looking for ages, spent fortune on 1837. searched from 1850 when she would have been 15 appox, right up to her death in 1869. And found Nothing. I have just sent off for four certs.. two birth and two deaths for children of John Coulby and Sarah Selmes who died v young.
