If your rellie is on a boat any time on any census, by viewing the ''Description of Enumeration District'' page it should tell you the weight of the boat, home ''port'' where it was situated on census night, the Master, or owner and what the boat was used for. merry

Census night could prove quite interesting,often the migration through the country (as referred to in Paxmans WDYTYA) would reveal names of families not of the waterways but en route to another area. Just makes it awkward to tie in a names(s) to an unexpected area. Births on a boat can make highly confusing or amusing birth certs,i know of one where the boat was called Moon. So the cert reads place of birth 'Moon', Gas St Wolverhampton! Then of course many boats named after towns eg Bedworth,Banbury etc. Glen

hi, i know it late but only just found this part of site.. my parent lived on the canals.. Boswells, Powells, Merchant and Brace.. i'm have trouble chasing family history from then.. i was the only one in my family to be a townie (as mum would say)

We have a canal boat and I'm very interested in the history of the canals etc. If on Ancestry you go to the places where canal boats were common eg Braunston, Stoke Bruerne, Banbury, Blissworth, etc you may find some boats. Eg in 1881 there were 10 boats at Braunston (RG11 1559 folio 117 page 33-35). It gives names of boats and people. I too found the Stoke Bruerne museum good. Have also found canal and boat family info in county records offices and local museums where there are canals (not many places where there ar enone I think). The problem is I have only to see 'museum' and I'm off to investigate and end up not remembering what was in which museum where! There is a thread somewhere on these boards about tips for record office visits. All good tips but I'm ashamed to say I have ignored them too often! Has anyone a good tip for filing/finding all the trivia which can be collected along the way? Clive
