Christine, Thank you so much for tracing all of this information for me. I think it would be best if I order my grandfathers birth certificate at least that way I will see what his mother was called. The hopefully be able to trace back to her marriage to my G/grandfather. Thanks again. Vanessa

Had a look on Lancs BMD - I reckon you really do need the birth cert... Kirsten, I thought the most likely would be Harriet Alice as the age seems about right. But I suppose its just all guess work. I will have to send off for some certificates and that should help me on a bit futher. Thanks for looking for me. Vanessa

Sorry I couldn't help, but I have found all the Hampson deaths in Sept 1899 that could be her within reason: Hampson, Harriet Alice Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 36 Quarter: September Year: 1899 District: Prestwich County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 376 Hampson, Helen Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 45 Quarter: September Year: 1899 District: Prestwich County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 347 Hampson, Florence Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 21 Quarter: September Year: 1899 District: Nantwich County: Cheshire Volume: 8a Page: 233 Hampson, Mary Ellen Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 40 Quarter: September Year: 1899 District: Chorlton County: Lancashire Volume: 8c Page: 650 All the other female Hampson's where either aged 0 or were too old to have children. June, I thought it would be quite simple tracing the HAMPSON's as there aren't many listed down in my part of the country so I thought it was quite an unusual name. How naive of me seeing as my dad orignates from Manchester there are loads of them. Still it's kept me occupied. Vanessa

You don't actually KNOW that she died in childbirth until you get the death cert. She might have died a bit after the birth. I'm saying this as I have a couple of female ancestors whom I was told died in childbirth, only to find they died months later. But if you find any female Hampsons of childbearing age dying in the same reg district as your grandfather was born between the quarter he was born and the quarter the census was taken, they might be yours. Depends on how many there are - if there's only one it will almost certainly be yours - but the death cert won't have her maiden name on it. nell

Kirsten, Haworth/Howarth is my dads middle name as well has my grandfathers, so I don't think it would be on her side if you see what I mean. Thank you anyway. Vanessa

Karen, Thank you so much for doing the checking for me. I suppose I could check the names you have given me on the Death records, as I know that she died giving birth to my grandfather, so if ones of these names you provided comes up it might be another angle to come from? Does that make sense? Vanessa

Kirsten

Kirsten Report 4 Feb 2006 16:40

Hello Vanessa, Maybe Haworth was the maiden name of your great grandmother? Just a suggestion. Kirsten

Vanessa, Had a look on IGI searching for a marriage for James Hampson in Lancashire in 1896 + - 5 years and it only found one match. James Hampson and Kathleen Mary Janetta Mines married on 1 Aug 1896 in Adlington Lancs. Then looked on BMD for the Sept Qtr 1896 and found 3 possibilities - Vol 8e Page 950 in Chorley district to Kathleen M J Mines Vol 8c Page 1320 in Chorlton district to Louisa Dutson or Maggie Taylor Vol 8d Page 1085 in Oldham district to Bertha Standring or Jessie Thomas. Looks like you will really have to send for your grandfathers birth cert first to solve this and be able to work back further. Karen

Karen, It's just my bad typing I meant 1866 sorry for the confusion. He is shown as age 35 on the 1901 Census. Maths never was my strong subject!! Thanks Vanessa

Help, I have managed to find my G/Grandfather and grandfather on the 1901 Census. I know that my G Grandmother died in childbirth in Sept 1899 having my grandfather (1899). I have no record of her name, I have checked the deaths register and there are one or two which could possibly be her. How can find which one of these is her? I've looked back on the 1891 Census and now can't find any exact record of my g/grandfather. Where should I go next? Thanks. Vanessa (with a migraine starting)
