Gigi

Gigi Report 13 Feb 2006 12:58

i have added blood relative, ancestors, anyone really, but so far no matches, but i'm not giving up a lady that works at the FRC said encourage as many to join as poss, she reconned as soon as enough people have entred their details it will be as good as GR, maybe better as the census are hard evidence and will stop people adding any old name to their tree with no real evidence of a link. So i encourage you all to join and add your info, its free so what have you got to lose??

Registered some time ago and entered several direct and one ' by marriage ' but no joy. Think part of the problem is the date - 1881 - Why only that period ?

Kate

Kate Report 14 Feb 2006 11:22

Brenda - the reason it is only 1881 is because you can enter details from the LDS transcription of the 1881 census, which everybody can access free. Any transcription errors you have to enter as they have been transcribed, for the matching process, and then you can put up corrections to them. This makes their matching process relatively simple. For any other census year, they would either have to specify a pay site such as ancestry to get the transcription from (and presumably they would have to come to some agreement with that site for use of the data) so that if you couldn't afford the subscription or credits to that other site you couldn't post your rellies up (and also, you would have to rely on worse-quality transcriptions!), or they would have to let you enter your own transcription of the census entries, which might not match somebody else's transcription of them. Even the folio number can vary depending on what index you use because each folio has two sides, but unless you were looking at the actual piece of paper, you don't always know which page is on the back of which other page! So it would be much harder for them to do their matching process on any other census. Hope this makes sense. Kate.

Kate, Thank you for your explanation. It does make sense of course.

Wow have entered by direct ancestors and blood rellies but only have 18 so Far! I am really envious of all of you! Guess I'll have to pull my socks up - must try harder!! LOL I do think the idea of the site is great, they have said that if 1881 proves a success they will consider adding other censuses, so keep posting everyone! Christine

Site is a great idea but if you get a match you have to subscribe or hope the other person has as you can't contact them without a subscription. They had an ancestry discount not long ago which was good I got 10% off the price. Haven't found any matches yet though. One drawback is that a couple have to register twice - one for husband and one for wife. Is annoying as I'm the only one researching and so have to log on and off site to add my side or his. I emailled them a suggestion to have one log on and the reply was that it was too hard to do and may confuse people. Rubbish if you ask me. If you can work out who your ggggrandma is you can differentiate between husband's rellies and yiur own. Toni

I would love to use this site but all my ancestors came out to Australia in the 1850s. Can you somehow access this using known descendents of a sibling ? Kerri

Maria, they've had big problems with AOL not letting the automatic password through. Let them know about it if that's your case. Anne

Hi I joined and as I got details kept adding but no matches, UNTIL tonight, added another branch I had researched today, and a match. So paid my subsription to send a message and did an extended search, cos i was now a member and another match, so now waiting for 2 replys. Any idea how long the messages take to get through? Nearly as excited as when I am waiting for certificates. Sue
