Am told this is my distant cousin Emily SMEARDON and her children in 1871 (hubby William was at sea). Trying to work out what Emily senior's maiden name was and where she was born (having found her in later records, she doesn't seem to have been born in the same place twice!!) All suggestions gratefully received!! Thanks!!

Surely her maiden name is -Hiltitaff ?? Or do you mean what the name is in its correct spelling?

Sorry Carrie - getting late - brain tired!! Would that it were Hiltitaff - it's obviously a mistranscription of some sort - but have tried all sorts of combinations a drawn a blank!!

If the transciber can turn Smeardon into Smarchen, anything's possible!!
