I have my hubby`s grandad`s birth date 11/8/1910 and place of birth which was in Pontypridd in Wales. Do i have to get his birth certificate from wales or is there somewhere over here i can get it from. Kindest Regards Lyn.

you need the gRO reference number (from freeBMD) or 1837 online, then you can order the cert from GRO on line. Cost £7. Ann Glos

The GRO covers both England and Wales. Certificates can be ordered online here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ Certificates for Wales are identical to those for England, except that all of the printed information is in both languages!

Or you can order from Pontypridd register office, in which case you won't need the GRO ref: Courthouse Street Pontypridd Mid Glamorgan CF37 1JS Tel +44 (0)1443 486869 Fax +44 (0)1443 406587

Surprisingly with a name like Jones, there are quite a few matches.. QE Sep 1910 William Jones, Pontypridd, 11a, 601. William J Jones, Pontypridd, 11a, see Jun 1914 (?) William J Jones, Pontypridd, 11a, 628 William J Jones, Pontypridd, 11a, 732 I looked at QE Jun 1914 but I don't know which entry they are referring to QE Jun 1914 William J Jones, Powell, Pontypridd, 11a, 1316 William J Jones, Jones, Pontypridd, 11a, 1435 William J Jones, Morgan, Pontypridd, 11a, 1224 Your best bet would be to do what someone else suggested, order direct from Pontypridd Reg Office. You know the date of birth and so they should be able to find the right entry for you. It'd probably be a lot quicker than ordering through the GRO anyway! Good luck

Hi Rachel Many thanks for that you are a jem, can i ask what does QE stand for and on the bottom lot do i take it that was the mothers maiden name. Kindest Regards Lyn x.

Rachel

Rachel Report 16 Feb 2006 21:45

QE stands for Quarter Ended so QE Sep 1910 which includes all births registered between 1st July & 30th September 1910. I think that you had 6 weeks from the actual birth to register it. And yes, the 2nd lot included mothers maiden names, this appeared on the index sometime during 1911. Hope you get a good result from Pontypridd Reg Office.
