Had they gone into service somewhere? Lots of girls did that at a very young age. My great grandmother was a servant in an inn at the age of 8. What had happened to their father? Was their mother a widow in 1871 as the family are then living with the children's grandfather?

If William died in 1870 how can he appear on 1871 census with different birth details and variant surname? MOE!

Hi Moe - I think the 1861 William is their father and the 1871 William is their grandfather as their father had died?

Yes, William (father of Hannah and Matilda) died 1870. His widow Sophia then went to live with her father-in-law (William b 1799) taking with her son James and daughter Mary Ann. I can find no ref to Hannah and Matilda. If they went into service at such a young age, why didn't their sister Mary Ann? A real puzzle. Steph
