As lots of people have messaged GR asking them if they could make the Auto Replies LESS rude and they have had no response (or at least, GR hasn't done anything about it!) then MAYBE if you were to ask GR, they might make you a ''special'' ***Auto Reply***!!! Jess would want to use it too, I believe (see above....) Merry

TinaTheCheshirePussyCat Report 25 Feb 2006 21:07

I want a rude message that says 'S** off and leave me alone'. I'm far too polite to soil my delicate little fingers by actually typing it myself. Last week I got a query from someone (I guess this was a hotmatch) who had an ancestor with a name matching one in my tree. This was a very, very common surname. I wrote back politely saying my relative had no descendants. I then got another message from the same person, asking about another name in my tree, with the same very, very common surname. They had opened their tree so I took the trouble to look and found evidence that there could not possibly be any connection. I wrote back very politely explaining what I had found and why there could be no connection. Today I got a message from the same person asking me to open my tree to them. I have written back, still politely, explaining that I am not doing so as it would be of no assistance to them. What do I do if they write again? I'm beginning to lose it here. Tina (counting down from 100 as it's quicker)

I reckon I've had both... I think that you don't get the auto-reply version if you go straight into Messages, but if you click on the link from your external e-mail, it lands you i the version with auto-replies. I wouldn't stake my life on that theory, though! Christine

Hi all, I use the co(.)uk version of GR and don't have the option of the auto replies. I've always wondered where they were! Not that I would use them, think they are very abrupt! Thought I was getting slow-on-the-uptake in my 'old age'! Sue 51 3/4 Update...yes I am getting slow....forgot GR deletes 'dot' uk.... have amended...duh....lol

I use .com and get the auto-reply option every time (don't use it though, I was brought up right :-)) Maybe you use a different browser to your husband? I run both Explorer and Firefox and the page looks different in each one.

I use the d o t c o d o t u k version and always get the autoreply option. I've never used it, although with some of the stupid queries I get it's very tempting... Michael (20 1/4)

I have changed the first message having seen hubby receive THREE messages this morning, all with the Auto Reply Option........ I suddenly noticed he uses c o u k version of GR and I use d o t c o m version. Does the UK version use Auto Reply ands the USA version not use it???? Answers on a postcard, please....... Yes, It was just that yesterday I saw him typing in the little narrow box next to which were the autoreplies (obviously I have trained him not to use them LOL). It was only when I saw this that I realised I have not had a request come to me where I get the option of the auto reply or the narrow box to type in for at least 8 or 9 months, but he says he never gets anything come through any other way (maybe an exageration, I suppose??) It just seemed strange to me, but as you say, may just be that I have a better class of rellie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! merry

Good question Merry! I always try and be nice and polite by sending a personal reply, even if there isn't a connection. So, consequently, I've never even looked for one of those replies. Maybe your hubby's prospective rellies could do with a lesson in etiquette! :~0 Jeanette x

UPDATE - If you access your GR messages by clicking the link from your email account, you will get the option to send an Auto Reply to the message or to type a reply in a little box measuring about 10 character spaces across (roughly!!). HOWEVER, if you come straight onto this site and access your GR Inbox by clicking on ''Messages'' over on the left, you will not see the Auto Replies thingy and will get a semi-reasonably-sized box to type your reply in!!
