age men were at war????

I think it's most likely to be a coincidence. Obviously you will need to get the Nottingham death cert and when it comes, hopefully the information on it (such as who registered the death) will hopefully tell you whether it's the right cert or not. The chap who died in France would have a death cert too, but it would be indexed in the GRO Overseas, Army Deaths. HOWEVER........Mistakes DO happen. For instance, there were certainly men who survived WW1 who would take their friends to see their name on the local war memorial!! So, it is POSSIBLE your chap was badly injured in France and he was brought home, where he died. Meanwhile he was recorded as Missing Presumed Dead in France. Having said that, I think it far more likely your chap died of natural causes at home and the chap in France was someone else!! Merry

I'm sure I read somewhere max. age 45 for call up, but he could have lied about this age. Is there a local War memorial that would have this name on? Keith

how do you know this one was from nottingham? I can't see that. I would have thought he was a bit old to be fighting in a war, but I know my grandad lied about his age to join up (said he was older) am intrigued now

An Olde Crone Report 6 Mar 2006 22:57

Claire Although 54 does seem rather old to be on active service, by 1917 we had lost so many men that they were taking anyone who could stand up. I think I would be slightly worried if it was my rellie. Are you sure he died on active service? Civilians still died of natural causes even though there was a War on. I don't know the answer to your query about the registration district. Olde Crone
