If you really intend to do a lot of serious study, you should take out a sub with ancestry then you can spend hours and hours checking things out - it has all the census info from 1901-1851 and 1841 due shortly plus lots of other goodies that you will get to use, such as the births, deaths and marriages index. If you go and register free on the Lost Cousins website, you will see an ancestry logo there which will give you 20% off the yearly sub - so works out about £55 for the whole year 24/7 with no more to pay. By the code, do you mean the reference? Its the GRO reference you need to identify the certificate if you buy it online or by post from the General Records Office. Online it is £7.

The Medway CityArk site is the only place where I've been aware of Parish Register page-images being online. Otherwise you contact the relevant County Records Office (as Nell has said) -or whatever they call themselves (Genuki has lists of useful things like that). Or you could see if there's anyone who's going there anyway and has time to look out for your record and get the copy for you. (Try the Records Board). Providing you have the date & place, it shouldn't be too horrendous a burden - but it is a matter for the individual, who may have masses to do on their own account (as I shall do when I eventually get to the Hampshire Records Office in Winchester). With the Pete-in-Glos info, you should be able to get a copy of the Parish Register page instead of buying a cert. It's usually cheaper (although the Record Offices have sussed out that it does take up their professional and admin time, so they do usually make a charge); but best of all, the Register page is the one with the original handwriting - and original signatures: much more interesting than a transcription - even a contemporary one. And more reliable... I was able, with my pre-existing knowledge to identify that a groom's father's occupation wasn't ''cashier'' (which it did look like) but ''carrier'', but I couldn't have been certain he hadn't changed jobs without being able to see an image of the original. OK, we'd be better starting with 1901 and following back, so, did they have children, if so, who and born when (something positive to look for in 1901)

My gg grandfather was William Taylor born 1870 and died in 1941, i think he was born in liverpool and later moved to st.helens. He married Catherine Woods who was born in 1869 and died in 1944 who i think was also born in liverpool. Thanks

Morning Mand, You need to start with yourself ie, your date of birth and where born etc. Then your parents marriage and their dates of birth. You may need certificates to prove your way back to the first available census in 1901 so you know who you are looking for. On the census when you find your relatives it will give you their rough age ,their occupation, place of birth and address. what have you got so far? Cathy

Elly Report 11 Mar 2006 08:11

Hi Mandy If you've enough names to get back to 1901 then you can search through census details which will give other family members and occupation of working people. If you can't get that far back, then you may need to order birth/marriage certs to confirm parentage etc. There are several free sites familysearch(.)org freebmd(.)org(.)uk and others you need to subscribe to to get details but are free to search ancestry(.)com or co(.)uk have a look Elly
