I am looking for Annie Hussey b.1864. Hawkchurch Devon. in the 1871 census, if someone would be so kind as to have a look for me, thanks in advance.

Heather Report 13 Mar 2006 14:14

Know you said Devon but: Blimey bit of an age difference in that couple! Going back to look at image, something not right here? Nope, thats what it says, both daughters - I was thinking maybe it would say grandaughter for the Hussey girl. I can see why Mary married him, not only is he a publican but also a farmer! Can someone check image for that unusual Hegre name please? George Hegre abt 1804 Burton Bradstock Head Marshwood Dorset View Record Mary Jane Hegre abt 1844 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Wife Marshwood Dorset View Record Minnie M A Hegre abt 1860 Marshwood, Dorset, England Daughter Marshwood Dorset View Record Annie Hussey abt 1861 Hawkchurch, Dorset, England Daughter Marshwood Dorset Minnie was actually only 1 year old not 10!

Sorry I did mean Dorset, I have been researching a Devon branch all morning, I am getting tired :-) Looking forward to what you find on the image... Thanks.... maybe I have ancient rights to free beer somewhere in Dorset!!! Thanks very much for your time.

I think the name should be Hoare, think this is George in 1861 with first wife. Elizabeth Hoare abt 1807 Swyre, Dorset, England Wife Marshwood Dorset ............> George Hoare abt 1804 Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England Head Marshwood Dorset Henry A Hoare abt 1842 Purcknole, Dorset, England Son Marshwood Dorset Jane How abt 1837 Bettiscombe, Dorset, England Servant Marshwood Dorset Address New Inn, George is a Farmer of 26 Acres & Inn Keeper

Richard Report 13 Mar 2006 14:28

Is there anything on there to suggest why Annie has a different surname?

Heather

Heather Report 13 Mar 2006 14:32

Sorry, been on the phone. Well the image certainly looks like Hegre but the only others with that name are a lady who is visiting in Channel Islands in 1851: Hannah Maria Hegre abt 1801 England Visitor St Peter Port Guernsey View Record Frances Pittam abt 1809 British Subject Wife St Peter Port Guernsey View Record Joseph Pittam abt 1802 England Head St Peter Port Guernsey and a couple living in Cambs, so Im well with the possibilty of Hoare - the place and job match - but an unusual transcription mistake, eh?

Looks like this was a second marriage for both of them. Hussey being the mother's first husband's surname perhaps - or the mother's surname if the child was born out of wedlock.

Heather

Heather Report 13 Mar 2006 14:34

Yes, I can only think the mother was married before but cant see her in 1861 as yet - shed only have been 17 so may be she was unmarried The other daughter was actually born 1870 not 1860.

Here's the marriage Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1868 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hoare George Beaminster 5a 787 HUSSEY Mary Jane Beaminster 5a 787

How interesting, its all becoming alot clearer now. With an illegitimate birth like this, how often would you expect to see the fathers name on the birth/marriage certificate?

Fiona

Fiona Report 13 Mar 2006 14:42

Might be worth looking into this family.........could Annie be Sarah A. 1861. Hugh Hussey abt 1841 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Head Marshwood Dorset Mary A Hussey abt 1842 Misterton, Somerset, England Wife Marshwood Dorset Sarah A Hussey abt 1860 Marshwood, Dorset, England Daughter Marshwood Dorset Update.........no not that one!!! found Hugh in 1871.

Heather

Heather Report 13 Mar 2006 14:47

Yes, could be a possible, though mum is shown as Mary Jane with the marriage to the vernerable (but obviously sprightly!) Mr Hoare! If it isnt them, good chance rellies, so worth looking into and keeping. Especially as the Hoare family were in Marshwood in 1851!! You could look for Annies birth reg on the ancestry beta index - fair idea of the year and reasonably unusual name.

Tending to think that she wasn't married when she had Annie - have searched to see if there was a death of any male Hussey's in Dorset in few years prior to 1871 but couldn't see any that had a birth year near to hers. Anyway, this might be a coincidence but here's a birth that could easily fit hers: Name: Mary Jane Hussey Year of Registration: 1845 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Honiton County: Devon Volume: 10

Fiona

Fiona Report 13 Mar 2006 14:52

Marriage certificate would show fathers name for Mary Jane. 1851. Charles Hussey abt 1841 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Son Hawkchurch Dorset Elizabeth Hussey abt 1821 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Wife Hawkchurch Dorset George Hussey abt 1848 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Son Hawkchurch Dorset James Hussey abt 1822 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Head Hawkchurch Dorset James Hussey abt 1850 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Son Hawkchurch Dorset .....................>Mary Hussey abt 1846 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Daughter Hawkchurch Dorset Meyno Hussey abt 1843 Thorncombe, Dorset, England Daughter Hawkchurch Dorset

This might be Annie's birth entry: Name: Annie A_Ria Hussey Year of Registration: 1862 Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Bridport County: Dorset Vol: 5a Not sure what that middle name is - you'd have to look this up on the Free BMD indexes on Ancestry to find out - also to get the page number as that is missing from here (that's if you wanted to order the birth cert).

Richard

Richard Report 13 Mar 2006 15:10

You're welcome! By the way - if you happen to end up tracing the Hussey line further back and come across a Catherine Hussey, bear me in mind...I have a Catherine Hussey b1813 in my tree LOL - talk about coincidence. Whilst I was doing those searches I kept thinking, I'm sure I've come across this surname before somewhere...checked my tree and there she is. Probably not related to your Annie/Mary Jane - I think there is an Irish connection on Catherine's line, but you never know...
