Case solved!! My Great Aunt has come up with some info. Annie NEVER had a sister called Jane and her mother was definatly Irena. Looks like someone made a mistake when putting them on the census! There was no divorce or death and no wife Jane! Even though this is sorted feel a bit disapointed it was all so simple in the end! Thanks for everyones help :o)

My Great Aunt has the marriage certificate for Thomas and Irena! She found it this morning.... and I sent off for Malcolm and Annie's marriage certificate yesterday to prove Thomas was Annie's father! (Oh well I wanted the certificate anyway!). Just got to try and find out what happened to her. If someone got divorced between 1891 and 1901 would there be a record somewhere? ~K~ Ps. I applied for the cert at the Munciple Offfices, 181-191 Georger Street, Hull, HU1 3BY as this is where the form said to send it. Should I have applied for the cert at the GRO?

Thank you for all the replies. I'm going to admit to being a bit confused but I'll have a better look in my lunch hour and see if I can make sense of it. I don't have the internet at home so only get to check at work :o( I really do appreciate all the help though... looking to get as much of my tree done as possible as my aunt is ill and I want her to see more than what we already know. ''Sorry to wipe the smile off your face Sammy ;-) but this marriage is ten years after the birth of the first child. Could be a brother, though'' Excuse me Paul.............. I have posted BIRTH info - not Marriage!! There is a 5mth old William H Meggitt on the 1901 census!! Purchasing THAT cert would give the maiden name of his mother - Jane

That's the one Paul.....that's where I got the name Barker from - then looked it up in the GRO Marriage entries! Merry

So the question is, is Jane just a new first name used by Irene Barker, or a new wife??? I cannot see a death for Irene/Irena Meggitt, and her date of birth and place match up. Best thing to do is to get the birth cert for the last child (details supplied by Sammie further up). If the name shows as Irene formerly Barker or Jane formerly Barker than I would take it there was only one wife (unless Jane came along at the last minute!!). If the maiden surname is different then you are going to have to wonder what happened to Irene! Merry

The 1887 marriage entry for Thomas Meggitt Marriages Jun 1887 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MEGGITT Thomas Sculcoates 9d 255 has the same references as that for an Irene Barker. So that's the wife showing on the 1891 census. Merry

On the 1901 Census it has a THOMAS MEGGITT as the head and his wife is JANE MEGGITT. They are both aged 34 so born around 1867. I cannot find any record of their marriage and I would really like Jane's maiden name so I can try and make some links. Their first child was born around 1890. Any help would be apreciated. ~Kimberley~
