Can't help you on the Northants record office and their procedure Janet, as I have no ancestry there. All I can say is that I have consulted the ones at East Riding CRO and saved myself a lot of money - obviously no use if it was a registry office marriage. i wouldn't know the procedure for Catholic marriages, as i have never had to use those either. Janet Yes I do know what you are saying and I know that there are 2 entries, one for the church and one for the GRO but the churches tend to hang on to their copies for years. At least the Catholic churches often do as I have seen registers in Catholic Churches going back to late 1800's. I know that people do ask to see the church registers but most vicars/priests are too busy to allow open access to the general public. In any case one would be expected to pay a donation for the upkeep of the church to see the details which usually amounts to the same price as a cert. I have researched in Northants CRO for many years and did ask once for some records of a small village for the late 1800's to be told that they were still with the church concerned. I have to say that I have only ever seen the fiche index, not the actual certs, but maybe I am missing out on something here. Janet

Hi Janet, When people marry they sign two identical registers - one is for the GRO and the other stays with the church. It is the one retained by the church that eventually finds its way to the record office. The other register is copied, I think its the original that stays with the local registry office and the copied returns that go to the GRO.(This may be the other way round - someone else will confirm this, I'm sure.) I would be very surprised if you could view the actual certificates at any County Record Office from 1837 onwards. If this is the case why are we all paying £7 for certificates? Please do let me know if anybody has been able to view these certs with all the same info that you get when you pay your £7, as I have only ever been able to see the INDEX on fiche at the CRO. Janet

Lutterworth Rd would probably be in the parish of St Edmunds its still therre, just as it has always been!

Steve, In towns people don't always go to the local parish church, but I would think Lutterworth Road would be in the parish of Christchurch, as that church is just up the road. As for Delapre, well that area of the town is as much a mystery to me today as it was when I lived there! Perhaps comes under Far Cotton, and St Mary's? Sorry, best I can do, as I no longer live there, and wasn't a big churchgoer when I did. jay

Hi Everyone, Just to clear things up. Yes I do mean 1927 onwards. I have the reference GRO numbers of various marriages. Without having to buy the certs (as only 2nd or 3rd cousins) I would like to find out fathers name to clarify I have the correct people. The area is Delapre in the town of Northampton I believe. The road where they lived is Lutterworth Road. Is it possible to see the 'parish records' to check the marriage details? Steve

I think marriage regs for 1927 will be there, as the books are changed quite regularly. It's usually the bp and burials regs which stay at the church for longer, especially in small parishes in country areas. I have used marriage registers at the CRO as an alternative to sending for certs, and have been able to view the actual registers, as they have not been filmed - have certainly viewed some for the 1950's. jay

Steve Do you mean 1927 Records as you have written? Or did you mean 1827? Records for 1927 would not really be classed as Parish Records. The term Parish Records is usually taken to mean those records before General Registration, which in the case of the UK is any record before 1837. You will get all post 1837 Records either online through 1837 online or through your local library via the Fiche and Fiche Reader or through the FRC in London or through a local LDS centre to you which will also be in fiche format or through the. CRO also on fiche. County Record Offices tend to deal mainly with records pre 1837 and yes you will get parish records for 1827 if that is what you meant to write. When you say Northampton do you mean the town of Northampton or the county of Northamptonshire and if the county then what area? Janet

Perhaps the answer to the last post would be to ring the Northampton Office,getting the information direct 'from the horses mouth' so to speak. Nothing of a personal nature need be asked or given,just a request for what records and where they can be obtained. Apologies if that sounds a little blunt,but the best people to answer the question would surely be the office personell. Glen

That's the tricky bit I'm not sure where. I think I have a current address but again not 100% sure. Would parish records for the said period be at the CRO?

northamptonshire CRO would have thought where abouts did they live, i could possibly throw out some church names at you

I have traced a line from my tree to Northampton. I believe the childrens marriages were from 1927 onwards. Are there parish records avaliable for this time and if so where do I access the info please. Regards Steve
