Nell - I've found the marriage to Sarah Woodcock on the Staffs BMD site, married in 1901 at Burslem. I'll just go and look up the GRO ref no. They married Quarter 1, 1901 - 6b 105 - district of Wolstanton. Like I say though, the Staffs site lists the actual church, St John, in Burslem. All this work and it may not be him! Hope it is!

Hi, The Thomas you've found in 1901 married Sarah in 1901, at St John's Church, Burslem. Maybe she died and Thomas never told his new wife he was a widower? Or maybe the vicar got them muddled up in 1911 and put Thomas as a bachelor, instead of a widower, as you say his wife in 1911 was a widower. Off to look for a death of Sarah Mountford - clutching at straws probably! UPDATE - There's a possible in 1902, Quarter 2, aged 28yrs. Death is registered in district of Wolstanton.

Jeanette Report 26 Mar 2006 22:16

35 is quite old to marry first time in those days so perhaps he lied saying he hadn't married before the only way is to find that marriage cert. Jeanette

Does it say he is married or unmarried on the census? Sometimes the term son in law was used when we would say stepson. nell
