1861 census - George Davenport is the chap I am interested in..... and I think the mother is helping me out here by already giving me her maiden name as she looks to me to be LUCY SMITH DAVENPORT. Can you confirm this for me? I have the record if someone would be kind enough to cast their eyes over it!

Hi Diana Just a thought - but Smith might be Lucy's mother's maiden name rather than her own. Obviously, she could have kept her own maiden name upon marriage and used it as a middle name, but I do have quite a few who have been baptised with their mother's maiden name for a middle name. Mandy x

You often find that middle names like this often come from the surname of a mother, grandmother, or g. grandmother etc... Somewhere back in time you will find a connection to a 'Smith' Deax

Just to confuse things slightly: I have a lady who married into my family with the middle name smith, no idea where from though, Also I have the children of one of my so many great aunties, who took her surname as a middle name, and guess whay, that was Davenport!

PinkDiana

PinkDiana Report 3 Apr 2006 19:29

How funny!! Davenport is a famous name in history (not my lot) so maybe she just wanted to hold onto it!! Pink who is seriously thinking of bringing her maiden name in and being double barrelled now for the pure fun of it now I'm divorced!! :O)
