Hi Vanessa Like you I was born and bred in York.I always go to York to shop etc even though Leeds is nearer.Just can't stay away. If you are going to visit York cemetery let me know I could always meet you there, and with the bit of knowledge I have after already visiting it I might be able to help. The 2 chaps that have helped me were called David and Alf. Julie

Hi Julie. Thankyou for that info.I have lived in York most of my life. Born here left then came back like a bad penny. I am struggling with the amount of misspelling of the Mckegg name but that is to be expected. I am gratful for this site because a distant cousin found me and told me that we are decended from Russia. Brill or what!! Anyway i will phone the cemetery on friday morning and see what i can find out. Thanks again. Vanessa

Hi I didn't have to pay the chap who took me to my great grandparents grave,he did it out of the kindness of his heart. When I went to the cemetery I parked just inside the gates, not much parking space.but the chap said you can park outside the chapel inside the cemetery. I lived in York till 2 years ago now live just near Leeds. Julie

Hi Kimberley. I think it will be worth the expense of having a guide to help judging by the size of the cemetery. Vanessa

Hi Vanessa I have been in touch with York cemetery alot as I have quite a few of my family there. If you ring them on a Friday there are members of the friends soceity there and they are really helpful and can give you lots of info.If you wanted to go and visit the cemetery they also say to go on a Friday when these people are there.Opening hours are 9am-4pm. I got a list of all the Boag's burried there 15 in total and 11are my family they even told me what they had died from, and whether they were in a private or public grave. Julie

Finally found some info Searches: Genealogical enquiries may be made by telephone, letter or email but if you wish to visit the cemetery to make enquiries or to locate a grave on the ground you should make your visit only on a Friday (9.30am-4pm) when a member of the Friends will be available to provide help. It may be possible to provide assistance at other times but it is essential first to make an appointment to ensure that someone will be available to provide the required help. Charges: To help defray the continuous cost of running the cemetery charges are made for providing print outs from the database. These are based on the number of sheets or part sheets of information produced. A printout for a Grave Register or a Grave Occupancy search requires only one sheet but an Index printout can require more. In general dividing the number of individuals with the same surname by 60 gives an indication of the number of sheets required. The first 5 sheets £3.00 (3GBP) each. The second 5 sheets £2.00 (2GBP) each Subsequent sheets £1.00 (1GBP) each Thus an enquiry producing 4 sheets would cost £12.00 (12GBP), 8 sheets £21.00 (21GBP) and 14 sheets £29.00 (29GBP). All prices include world wide postage. An estimate of how many print out sheets will be produced by a search can be provided by telephone or email. Pedigrees £3.00 if under six sheets, 50p a sheet thereafter Photographic service £3.00 per photograph (sent via Email) or Prints (6ins x 4ins) £4.00 per photograph (send by post). Payment must be made by cheque or money order in GB pounds. The Trust does not have facilities for payment by any form of Plastic Card. Specific sections of the database on a disk can be provided for full time students and researchers from educational establishments tailored to meet their requirements. These are priced individually and a quotation of probable cost can be obtained by email.

Hi Just had a look because my family are from Hull and you never know! There are quite a few Carters there! Do you know if you can do the search it shows in the example? I'm interested in some other surenames which there are fewer of and it would be good to know their first names. Kimberley

Hi. Just thought i would put this website address down for anyone who lives in and around York. http://www.yorkcemertery(.)co(.)uk(/) I found this site by accident and it is very helpful. Not only does it give you the history of the cemetery but lists the surnames and how many of each surname are buried there.
