I cannot find my g grandfather anywhere on the censuses apart from 1871 and 1901. William David Stent born 1869 Eltham, Kent. His father was George Stent. On the 1901 census William was living in Foots Cray parish with: Alice Stent b 1867 Cranbrook Willliam b 1890 Bickley George b 1893 Chislehurst Ethel b 1895 Chislehurst John b 1900 Sidcup Where was he for 20 years? This is so frustrating!! I would welcome any help whatsoever. Thank you Julia

I can't see him either, Julia. Do you have any BMD certificates for him? Where did he and Alice marry? (I've just answered my own question - found marriage on Free BMD between Alice Archer and William David Stent in Greenwich, December quarter 1888 - sounds like the right one)

They married in the Greenwich district dec qtr 1888. I have him on the 1871 census living with his parents. His mother died 3 years later, and his father remarried in 1878. I can't find anything for his father either in 1881. In 1891 his father had moved to Leybourne in Kent. Thanks for looking for me. My membership to Ancestry runs out in 2 days time, and I am panicking now, trying to tie up loose ends! Julia

would have thought he/they should be in Bickley have you tried going thru the pages one by one ( the images) is this his son?? Stent looks like a name that could easily be mistranscribed. Have you tried variations - or just using his details without his surname? St often looks like an M on old writing -

If you bought William's birth certificate , it might give some clues as to his father William David's whereabouts via his profession (eg in army?)

I have done a first name only search for the Bickley and Eltham areas and trawled through thousands of William's and Alice's. This is driving me mad! Thanks everyone for your help. Julia

Jess, that isn't the correct John. Mine was born in 1900. William GT Stent was born in 1889 in Bickley (my grandfather) I have William's BC and his father was a groom. William was born in Eltham, Kent. Julia

I have Fanny's details. She was living just round the corner from where I live now, I was amazed! The house is still there too. :) Got Eliza's details too. Emily died aged 13 in 1880. Maybe he had a younger brother Frederick? Possibly living with his grandmother after his parents died? On William GT's BC, his father (William David) is a Coachman, domestic servant. Julia

Yvonne, Thank you!!!! That is my William! Why on earth I didn't think of looking for Slent. I was going through every name that I could think of being called when I had that name and trying it. Yvonne, Frederick has got to be mine too! The woman that he is staying with is my ggg grandmother. Her daughter, Eliza, was married to George. She died in 1874. Thank you again for your help. Julia
