i c where u r coming from cos i do no it is easy to find our where joe bloggs was born so to speak and i no its easy finding out where people live in the uk cos i have contacts some distant relly myself who i dont no but they turned out to b some relation or other but i wouldnt dream bout putting them on my tree on genes cos i do respect peoples wishes maybe i should think about doing my home work and find out where i stand legally cos this creep aint going to go away and genes well what can i say lol

Dotty Individual life events (BMDs) are indeed in the public domain and there is nothing to stop anyone supplying these details, for an individual event. What is NOT in the Public domain and is therefore covered by the Data Protection Act, is the stringing together of these events to identify a specific person - I hope that makes sense! In other words, if I have the marriage cert of Fred Bloggs and Ada Rowbottom, there is nothing to stop me embroidering a banner with that information and running round the town. But if I string that info together with Freds birth, ada's birth etc, then those people become recognisable and identifiable - not allowed, without their permission. And they can only grant permission to one person to do this - every time the information gets 'passed on', they need to give their permission to THAT person. Go for it - GR are obviously unable to think of a way to stop this man reloading the information onto GR, so really their only option is to ban him, isnt it? Good luck Olde Crone

right thank u for ur replys this is a message proving that this creep got his info from a third party i have removed names of course at the bottom he says he has tried to respect peoples privacys huh who is he kidding Originally I got my data from a guy in Australia named A, 3rd cousin of (my hubby)Dates are straight fom the General record office, ( I haven't checked (my daughter,) to which the public have access. The details are as follows:- Births Sep Qtr 1955 ??? Mother: ??W Hartlepool ref:1a 1443 Marriages Sep Qtr 1975 ?? F Spouse: Walton Durham N ref:1 1574 You will be also horrified to know that data is also available on disc to the general public giving details of where everyone in the UK over 17yrs was resident in 2003 and so hence my reasons for only putting t names only of the living on the tree rather than their place of biirth & birth dates as too as at Itimes I have tried to respect peoples privacy.

Email Genes Abuse and tell them you are taking advice from your Solicitor, under Data Protection laws.GR would presumably not like the adverse publicity that such action might bring? Email the Pratt and tell him the same thing.He might not care about adverse publicity, but he might worry about a Court action. Olde Crone

Dot it is irrelevant where the info came from-it stipulates in Genes regulations-and it is printed on the family tree to seek permission to include living people. he can download everything and take it off the site,but whilst the info is on this site genes have a duty to ensure your rights are protected.

Try sending him this. Copied from 'information commissioners office' site. In other words what he is doing is illegal. You I think would be perfectly within your rights to sue him, may be worth asking CAB particularly as the info. was given to him third party. Obtaining and disclosing offences It is an offence to knowingly or recklessly obtain or disclose personal information without the consent of the data controller. this creep told me he got his info from a bloke in oz if he came to me first and asked for any infomation regarding my family i might have helped him anyway i could this problem has been ongoing since last summer and cos of it i wont let any1 view my tree even if they r related in anyway whatso ever sorry if this sounds harsh but hey ho

Since GR says - explicitly - that you have to have permission to enter info about living people on your tree, then if this person persists in ignoring the rule, then I would expect GR to ban them. It is an abuse. Christine

soon as i find out he has put my name on his tree i email genes and they take them of again its like cat and mouse it is really getting me down i am thinking bout not being a member on here anymore

Well, you could contact GR again and point out that he has put your names back on his tree and ask them if they can tell him to remove them or be banned from the site? Not sure if they would do this but it is worth asking. Kate.

Oh, I see. I think all you can do is contact him and ask him to remove it again. I suppose if he imports his info by gedcom regularly the info will come back again and again. Another problem is that he could be putting his info on Ancestry etc. Heather

it is very upsetting cos he knows that i dont want to b on his tree on genes and his reaction is stuff u i couldnt care less sort of thing i wouldnt dream bout putting any living rellies on my tree on genes not even my daughter

for the past few months i have had contact with someone who is a distant rellie and he is being a totle pain in the bum he has put me and my hubby and daughter on his tree without permission and he no i dont want my name on his tree on genes i have asked and asked till im blue in face and he wont take us of i have also been in touch with genes and they take our names of and i got a email the other day from estelle saying our names have been deleted from his tree so i thought thats great till i switch on my computer and come on here and finds the bloody creep put our names on again so i mails gene again what can i do to get this creep to keep our names of his tree on genes any ideas this is getting me down
