I knew Boro, but I hadnt bothered to use it because on my first try with it I had a very common name and it just seemed much easier to go straight to ancestry and search with more detail. I was just going through the program tree looking at the marriages and deaths I hadnt really put a lot of effort into and thought Ill have a go, see if websearch helps. They were more unusual names so came up with the goods.

Be careful about the locations. There is an Ashton-under-Lyne very close to Dukinfield & Stalybridge. Ashton in Makerfield is much nearer to Leigh. Both are called Ashton by people who live there.

Emily theres nothing complicated about parish records its just very time consuming. They were just big books normally kept at the local church and the clerk or vicar would enter baptisms, marriages and burials in them. When you need to find someone like this chap you consult the records for the parish he was born and just look through - usually on microfiche or film at a records office til you find his baptism. It wont give you much info - usually just dads name and mums first name,. Ive been lucky in that in Norfolk they seem to give more info, Ive had mums surname. You then look through the records again for children also born to the same couple. You can go backwards until you hopefully find the marriage of the couple and so on. It can be maddening because in a village you will get extended families and it gets confusing if you have several James all marrying Sarahs and producing more James and Sarahs! Well, Im a novice, so perhaps someone more experienced can give a better run down for you!

Well, the information I have is what my Dad found when I was younger. He definately has Peter as born in Ashton, so it looks like it could be the first one.

If Emily means Parish & Probate off Ancestry I'd love to know what it's all about too. BUT Emily, if you mean IGI it's easy, if a bit time consuming. google 'Hugh Wallis' to get into the site, choose your county, if you have an idea of the town it helps. 'C' numbers are christenings (which often give parents' names), M numbers are marriages & as far as I can work out E numbers are 'lucky dip' !!! Good luck Sarah:-)

Ideally, I'm looking for Peter Unsworth, born in 1803, in either Lancashire or Cheshire. He was my gt x 4 grandfather.
