Desperately trying to work out the maiden name of an ANN who married a Joseph Newton ,.......see below.

In 1841 they are listed as Joseph Newton born Lincoln- horse keeper Ann Newton born Edwinstowe>>>>???????????? Elisabeth 6 born Ollerton William 4 same Richard 1 same living in Ollerton are there any ways by fair means or foul that her maiden name can be sussed other than going to local parish records? is it safe to assume that they married in her locality?

You don't say hold old Joseph & Ann are, do you think this is their first marriage? There is this on IGI but prob. too early. IGI have an entry for 1834 edwinstowe- no surname-obviously guesswork based on that census entry- yes of course -durrr......richards birth cert would answer a few questions at the same time,or maybe not as I realise now that he wasnt the first born.......the Tudsbury mystery is doing my head in as the only Ann Tudsbury born at the time wasnt born with that name,it was her married name.

Alter, if you want me to look through the Ollerton parish records next time I go to Notts Archives, just let me know, and I will be happy to. Is Richard your ancestor, or is it one of the older children who is? (just in case Ann is a second wife) Kate.

Per IGI there were only two Ann's baptised in Edwinstowe 1810-20. That was Ann Bowring and Ann Mountain. Ann Mountain married in Edwinstowe in 1838 to James Shirtliff.......

Thanks ladies.........my direct ancestor is mary newton,daughter of ann and joseph newton,she is a younger sister to richard-there were 9 children in all. Elizabeth born c 1835 William Richard>>>only one to insert Tudsbury name so far John Mary >>later wife of my direct male bloodline -x4 . Joseph Agatha Charles Robert born c1854.

Well then, I would say your best bet is definitely to get the birth certificate of one of the children. Kate.

So the Bowring one looks promising. kate-that would be awesome-I had been planning a trip myself and staying at ollerton etc,to look round the churchyards- I have been there once before ,but it had nothing to do with research-the problem with my lot is that there are records in 3 different places-despite them all living in ollerton,mansfield and pleaslyhill,the borders have split the records up-some are in Matlock,some mansfield ,some nottingham.

Helen-yes I noticed that-the ollerton-edwinstowe thing !? How did you get the baptism-was that IGI?

There are microfiches of more or less all Nottinghamshire parish records at the Nottinghamshire Archives (in Nottingham), but not Derbyshire ones, so I would be able to look up Ollerton and Edwinstowe there definitely. Kate.

Its very time consuming though isnt it- I spent hours in cheshire records office tracking evry child of one couple-there were 15 of them fom the first wife and another 6 later.........perhaps a specific objective is best-having said that edwinstowe is a small place.....would be a case of just flicking through a couple of reels ? perhaps i could offer cheshire lookups in return if you need them or trade directory lokups at either chester or liverpool if they are relevant?

It's microfiche there, not microfilm, and I don't think it will take very long just to look at those two parishes as I am pretty sure they are small (compared to Worksop which is where one branch of my ancestors came from and I always have to psych myself up for ages to look through that one!) I may just have a Cheshire lookup you could do in return but I am hoping a relly of my partner's is going to take that on as they are their rellies not mine! Kate.

Birth cerificate first I think? We're getting a bit carried away. Yes I used IGI but I only use PRs from there, I don't trust 'member submitted' entries.

Darksecretz- too early I think-but thanks-1815 -1816 Im looking for. Helen -yes-thare are some shocking entries-total guesswork and half truths in there,and multiple entries for the same thing-a very messy site,that is a last resort for me.

But the 'proper' Parish Records are very good, I've found very few mistakes when I've checked them to the originals.
