Just one thing Ali, when you go to the GRO (never go anywhere else on line, people have been charged up to £50 a cert elsewhere), you will be asked to fill in your card details to purchase the cert.

You make it sound so easy, it's just thinking logically really .. and unfortunately right now I'm not .. but I suppose I can search on Mary's name to find out if she is born at the right time. Thank you very much for all your help ... I'm going digging!

The marriage and death info were on the freebmd listings on ancestry, but you can search freebmd yourself free at http://freebmd.rootsweb. com/ (remove space after .). The marriage is only a possibility mind you as freebmd listings are not complete. There could be another Thomas/ Mary match in the relevant district and timeframe which has not been transcribed yet. If you know Thomas' father's name (I have him on 1851 census if you haven't) you can use this as a checking point when ordering the certificate. Liz

How much do I owe you??? .. do you charge by the hour or the minute? lol I've been struggling with the wife's name which is why I needed the birth cert for grandfather .. where did you get that information? Huge hugs! *thinks cheekily to self that maybe will put all family details on board and hope someone else does the work!*

Yes, you can search for a possible marriage. Have you found the family on the 1841 census? Alternatively you can try the IGI - this is a collection of some (not all) Parish Registers in England and Wales, and can be searched free on www.familysearch.org. You may get lucky lol. Liz

One more question! I know who his father is .. but he was born in 1833 .. how can I get details of his birth as the register goes from 1837? He was born in the same area, but I have only been able to trace him from the censuses .. do I go for a marriage certificate? Ali *blushes in shame at her ignorance*

Hi Ali, You have the GRO reference number (the District, Volume and page number), so you can order online from the GRO - I believe I gave you the link above. This will cost you £7, and you will wait a few weeks for it to arrive. Alternatively, you can send an s-a-e containing a cheque for £7 to Kendal Register Office, detailing as much as you can. Do not include the GRO reference however, it will mean nothing to the staff in Kendal as they will have their own filing system. The address is: Kendal County Offices, Kendal, LA9 4RQ. Tel: 01539 7735667. It will probably come back inside a week, if they can locate it. Good luck, Liz

Sorry not to have replied before (a man came to mend my computer and broke it more!) but these are the details of the person for whom I want the birth certificate .. Name: Frederick Herbert Capstick Year of Registration: 1875 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Kendal County: Lancashire, Westmorland Volume: 10b Page: 716 So the best place to go is? And is that all the information I need. Thanks in advance. Ali

Where possible I try to order from my local Register office, Luckily for me a lot of my rellies were born lived and died local to where I am now. It's much quicker then the GRO. Those I don't live local to, or those the local one can't find I order through GRO Linda

Hi As already mentioned you can order certificates (birth, marriage or death) from the GRO,you can do this online and with the reference numbers (from ancestry or other sites) the certificates cost £7. You can also order from local offices, some take postal/telephone applications, you do not need the ref numbers in this case, but you would need a good idea of the likely place and approximate time of the birth/marriage etc. The cost is £7-8 depending on the particular office, but they are usually quicker than the GRO. However local offices only cover a reasonably small area so you need to know which office you need for each area,(Birmingham records for instance won't be held at the Newcastle office) There is a list of offices and contact details on the Genuki website. Personally i prefer the local offices but it isn't always possible to use them,(a lot of London offices will not issue certificates for 'family history' purposes. There are a couple of threads to do with local offices,if you want to know more just ask and i can nudge them up. Glen

I have always ordered min from GRO and have had to wait 4 - 5 weeks but I have just ordered one from a local Register Office and received it within 48 hours. Do you have the details? - Perhaps we could advise where to go? Dea x

Jenny Report 17 May 2006 16:07

Hi Ali, I agree with the above, but you will have to wait patiently. If you know the year and place you can order directly from the local office. Some offices send scanned or photocopied entries but many are typed or hand copied. They tend to be quicker than the GRO at present and most are very helpful. Just keep posting if you need any help. Oh - don't order online from anywhere other than the official site - you are likely to be overcharged or swindled in some other way!

The best way (in my opinion) to obtain a certificate is to get the GRO reference from the index, whch can be searched free on www.ancestry. co.uk (go to BMD beta section), and then order direct from the GRO online: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp This will cost £7, and is the cheapest way of obtaining a cerificate. If you need help searching for the reference, post the details here and we will try to help. Liz

Right .. I have now got as far as I can without the help of a birth certificate .. how do I go about getting one? Are all (forgive me for being thick) records from all over the country kept in one place or would I have to go to a specific records office? Can I order one off the internet? :o)
