Just to add my penny's worth - def not a J, would think Sarah or Hanah. But have you noticed that the guy in the same house is the Captain of a Coaster? Ditto two guys in the previous household. So if the hubby is a sailor, likely just on a small boat going round coast and possibly would be on a census.

Ahh, yes. On the 1851 that Reggie found John Shallcross is ......... a shoemaker!!!! Bebington is also described as Rock Ferry on the 1851. Anne

thanks again everyone, i think your right i think jane was janes mother, seeing how sarah or hanah would have been 16/17 at the time of janes birth. Ive found so much out tonight thanks to everyone on here i think it does say sailor husband then shoemaker at ?????

I think Janah/Hanah's occupation says Husband Shoemaker at ? Pretty sure the first word is Husband and not Rushland. Kath. x

so if her husband was at sea he wouldnt be recorded on the census? also i presume sarah or hannah?s husband was married before and the result was samuel? am i getting that right

I couldn't get the youngest daughter's name, Emma. Annmarie could be it. Maybe a trawl through the births around that time would give a clue. I think the enumerator in this case has been fairly careless so probably put down approximate what he heard or read. Anne

also - she is not a widow - but she is married and the sailor bit might be saying that her husband is at sea - it is difficult to read!

I think that Janah might actually be Sarah??

First there are only four people in the household. It is schedule number 196. The single line indicates a new household but still in the same building I think. The first name Janah, I'm sure is Hanah (female). It says she is married but she is only 24 and Samuel (supposed son) is 17. Perhaps he is the son of Hanah's husband by a former marriage. Hanah's occupation line is more difficult. I think it firstly says Sailor but this has been crossed out - perhaps her husband is a sailor like Samuel. Then it says Rushland - no idea what this means. Under that I think it says shoemaker at Meaton As for the birth place of the youngest daughter - hmmmm! It really does look like Brumtropool. However it is marked as being in Cheshire. Perhaps the Welsh enumerator couldn't understand where it was! Hope that helps Anne

First of all it looks to me like Janah (?) is female purely based on the column her age is in. I think it is also possible that her name is Hanah. Sorry I can't be of any more help than that for you. Lyn x

hi can anyone help me when you cant read something on the census what do you need to do, or if someone could look at it for me and see if they can read it because my eyes have gone really funny lol
