Hadleys is on the corner before you go up the cobbled street. sort of opposite. Our shop is between Shepherds purse and Duke of York Old Fashioned Sweets. Oh food again!!! The Archives is hidden away on the way out of town down an Alley near a Pizza shop! Food again!!

Whitby Library is being refurbished at the moment so no sources available. Hoping when it is there will be lots more available. I was amazed with the man at the Archives he was telling me all the people in the last couple of months who had been there enquiring plus the outcomes of the enquiries. I have every faith he will send me in the right directions.

If I remember there was a decoupage shop and a picture shop where I bought a modern brightly couloured view of the harbour from the top of the abbey steps. On the corner was a whitby jet shop and just up from there the Duke of York Pub,not forgetting Fortunes kippers up the road of course !..

mmm sad really-an area like that should be busy as its a very historical area....what I cant understand is libraries with ace facilities closing at 5.30 now in big cities,at a time when genealogy is huge.Liverpool is supposed to be spending millions on the Central library in an upgrade-they have 20 new microfilm readers, and extensive archives-yet if you are working the chances are limited.

Think Hadleys might be a burgundy colour now. big one on the corner. Our shop is just up from the Shepherds Purse. The Lizzie Hawksfield print is a good one. Wish i was related to the Freemans my tree would be done for me!

On a not so serious note.. we could meet at the Archives and the poor man wouldn't know what to do with us all... He probably only gets half a dozen visitors a week. I was there 3 hrs on my own. No wonder he was telling me to go back.

ive got quite a few of the prints-including the fisher girl-think shes called polly-such a serene look in her face,in contrast to the weather worn face of he lifeboatman Freeman who survived the disaster- is Hadleys the blue chippy?......also had a coffe in the Shepherds Purse !

Oh and my Grandmother is on one of his postcards (Not his published prints) we got the postcard blown up and have it in our homes now. (much cheaper anyway). And also our shop is on one of his photographs,

Tracy Report 26 May 2006 21:53

Oh yes... both.. It's a luxury now though so expensive!! Not been to the Magpie for 2 yrs. Can't get in i'm not queing for Fish and Chips. Hadleys fish and chip shop on the other side of the bridge is rated very good now too. And Mr Chips also on the other side. Think they all want the status so have had to sort themselves out.

Just want to say thankyou for the Whitby Archives tip.. I knew it existed but didn't really think they would be of much use. I wasn't sure what they held. I have been there today and the gentleman who was working was absolutely brilliant. He told me exactly what to look for next. Even scoured the records for buriels for me. normally £2.50 a time (a prompted donation charge to keep the place up and running) But he only charged me for the hits! So a BIG thankyou. I would never have gone there without you suggesting it as a resource.
