Am going there tomorrow. Found out recently that my Great Great Grandfather lived there all his life and have got a few addresses I want to check out. Anyone know what it's like? Linda

If you do a search on Google Images for Rye Sussex, there are some photos. Kath. x

Its lovely, narrow steep cobbled roads, there is a nice chip shop near the harbour! Have a mooch into Pevensey for me, thats where my Sussex lot were based.

Really excited now I've seen the pictures. I might even find one of the actual houses as he seems to have lived right in the middle of the 'old town' Mermaid Yard and the High street Linda

Inn or hotel, you are bound to be able to get a drink!

If you google The Mermaid Inn Rye it tells you about the place. You can stay there or just pop in for a drink. The place was rebuilt in 1420, but was originally there from 1156. Apparently it's much the same today as it was in 1420. Kath. x

By the pictures it's beautiful. Do let us all know what you think of it. We are hoping to go to Canterbury in about 3 weeks for a couple of days and will probably spend some time in Rye on our way home, might even persude hubby to stop overnight there. Josie

I was in Rye, - well the edge of it, earlier today, when we travelled along the A259. It was very misty. All along the coast there was a rolling mist off the sea. Hope it's clearer for you tomorrow as it made it quite chilly. Sunday in Rye means bikers. They seem to congregate near the edge of town and admire one anothers bikes. All ages of people, gleaming bikes.No trouble- it just seems to be the place for them to meet. Rye is just great. Mermaid Street is best viewed by walking uphill from near the bridge crossing the river by the windmill. Try to be near St Marys on the hour to hear and see the clock chime. Enjoy your day. Gwyn

Hi Linda, My Great Great Grandfather also lived in Rye, he had a shop in the High Street his name was Charles Ellis - any connection? :-) Maggie

Hi Maggie, Just looked on 1861 census and see that your Great Great Grandfather was at 35 High Street and mine was at 47 High Street. His name was Lewis (Louis) Tickner. He was at the same house on, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census and then on 1891 he seems to have moved two houses along. My other G.G.Grandfather was at Middle Street, The Coach House next to Hylands Yard and then 11 Mermaid Passage. Perhaps they knew each other. Linda

Thanks everyone. I had a great time. Weather was lovely, had no trouble parking, must have been lucky. One thing that was disappointing, although funny, was that my Great Great Grandfather had lived in the same house in High Street for forty years. As we got nearer and nearer I was getting sooo excited and then........ Woolworths. Apparently only two bombs dropped on Rye in the Second World War and one was on his house. Paul said lets go in and you might be standing in his front room, silly b*gger lol One great thing was that Hylands Yard and Mermaid Passage were still there where my other GGGrandfather lived, and The Coach House which was beautiful. Probably wasn't then lol Went in the church where GGGrandma was married and lit a candle. You were all right it's a lovely place, Will definitely go again. Linda Went in the Mermaid and had a drink
