Thanks everyone for your responses. I too have been muttering away in a deep gutteral german accent (possibly) trying to work out what an enumerator would have written down. Also the family appear to be unable to read and write, just making their mark along the way, so wouldn't know whether it was spelt right or not. I can't prove that this family are connected to mine or were just honorary Aunts and Uncles although my remaining, extremely elderly Aunts insist that they were relations. I think this will have to go on the back burner for now but at least some sort of progress has been made. Thanks to everyone for your interest and help. Marion |
