My two gg uncles, brothers to my great grandmother, were Mariners out of Liverpool.........they both married before 1861 and since then, I have found it impossible to discover them, their wives or any potential families they may have had on any single census. My question is ~ Would wives have gone to sea with their spouses in 1860+ . Might sound silly I know.....but am clutching at straws and trying to cover every angle? I can't think of an explanation as to why I cannot discover the wives at least, on any census, even though both husbands were at sea? Hope someone can throw a few feasable suggestions my way please!!!! Jen

1891 is a nightmare for a start

Alter, was thinking that as these brothers married within two years of each other, both trained as block makers and went to sea with that trade.........that it may have been likely that they at some point, could have served on the same ship (the younger brothers FIL having been a Master Mariner), ? Wondering if they might have i.e, gone from say here to there? and stayed abroad with their wives?? So many what if's? The earleir census' would have been more interesting and perhaps more revealing.......IF only!!!! Jen

Jen, I think it's possible the wives went to sea with them. I'm told my g-g-g-grandfather took his wife and daughters with him sometimes. He was a Master Mariner living in Liverpool as well, died at sea in 1863.

For Ann in Chesterfield and anyone else with ancestors who were Liverpool Pilots, there is a book published by the Liverpool Nautical Research Society, titled: 'List Of Pilots 1734-1990 ' just type this into 'Google' and you will get lots of info, 'Good Luck'

Moe, Names you requested. Jonathan Chandler born 1835 Liverpool, married to Elizabeth Mercer b 1836 ? In Dec qtr 1858 St Peter Liverpool. Block Maker ( for rigging ) Wedding cert occ: Mariner.
