I'm looking around at places the ancestors lived and can't find a lot. Does anyone have any websites that might have the places as they were in 1700s and 1800s? The places are Berkeley Square and Clifton Park. I'm presuming Bristol, but maybe Bath. Thanks.

Think it will be Bristol, because by googling, there are properties for sale in Clifton Park, Bristol, but no results for Clifton Park, Bath. Kath. x

Hi, Definitely Clifton the posh part of Bristol, I think we are talking money here. They are lovely old houses. I live in Bristol and know someone who works in one of the Clifton Park homes that has been turned into a nursing home. If you want me to look for any names I have some resourses for Bristol.

Thanks Annie, Yes there was certainly money. Don't know what happened to it. These are my mysterious Ariels. They always have occupations like'gentleman'. Actually they were slave traders. Had their own ships. They had a house in Berkeley Square another in Clifton Park and another in Weston Super Mare( I think that's what it was called) all at the same time all with their own set of servants. I didn't realize they would be so much fun to research.

Ive only just found some really rich ancestors and I thought where is the dosh now but when you look at them, early 17th century, knocking out a dozen kids each, times that dozen kids by another dozen kids each and so on, you can see why they ended up as ag labs 200 years later.

Have you read 'A respectable trade' by Phillippa Gregory. Its a historical novel which gives a good background to the slave trade in Bristol. It was made into a television series over here which caused a bit of fuss as Bristol does not like to admit that is how they made their money. The British and commonwealth museum in Bristol recently had an exhibition on slavery in Bristol so they might have something. The other people to contact are the Bristol museum service as they have a restored Georgian house in Clifton. The B.B.C ran a programme where a modern family tried to live in a georgian house and published a book on the series which I think was called the Georgian house. The Bath record office are placing snipets from Bath Georgian Newspapers on line which are fascinating. Also anything on Jane Austen is likely to be relevant as she lived in Bath but did not like it much.

Lucretia Ariel abt 1806 Clevedon Somerset View Record Mary Eyer Ariel abt 1834 Somerset, England Clevedon Somerset also this pair in 1841. Lucretia is an annuitant. Clevedon is just up the Severn estuary from Weston.

Elizabeth I know this is a long shot and posing a bit but I read a French biography of the British primeminister Benjamin Disraeli by Andre Maurois called Ariel which was D'Israeli's family's jewish name.

Thanks Annie, I've got Ariels popping up all over the place. I knew it was a Hebrew name, but not sure of any connection. There is also a French one. When I got married in the 70s the only Ariels in Australia were all cousins or second cousins. No others. Now I have them traipsing all over England. Why is it, just when you think an unuausl name will be a doddle, you end up with notes and bits of paper everywhere.

Elizabeth, You need to get in touch with Bristol record office as they have copies of William's account book and his will. A couple of questions Did Miles adopt the name Clark? Did William own ships called the Ariel and the Hebe? Why is other people's research always more interesting than your own? I am sorry I did not realise that there was another genreation of Miles ariel I just found this Weston Super Mare marriage. 1868 Apr 23 Myles Ariel Clark 25 b. Yes Reggie you are right but on old records Bristol was divided between Gloucestershire and Somerset along the river so Clifton is Gloucestershire and Bedminster is Somerset which causes a lot of confusion. Recors tend to say Clifton Gloucestershire.
