Wulliam, I've had a look and although I don't know a single thing about making a website I agree with the comments the others made (but only so you can make it so much nicer). What I really wanted to say was WELL DONE for doing it - wish I could do that sort of thing!!! Hmm, maybe night classes this year? Snowdrops

Are you putting William instead of Wulliam? Cheers, Horatia

The reason you may not be able to see the website is that you have to replace the asterisks * with a d o t . in each place. Cheers, Horatia

Wulliam It looks pretty good on Mozilla Fire Fox - but very blue on the homepage, the links are getting a bit lost. I would suggest the background colour is taken back/ down a shade or two. Suggestions: Regarding MacLeod - if you are going to link her via hyperlink to her husband, don't name her on the husbands page. I would suggest pale colours for the backgrounds as they tend to be gentle on the eye, have a look at this site and play around with the colour settings at the end - http://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/ Waite and Ashman - the links to the trees (from indevidual records) go straight back to the home page sorry for the critisums, they are meant to be constructive rather than destructive.

William, Your email address is just as vulnerable as it is in text The automatic spiders can pick that up just as easily as a mailto. The only way of fooling them is to make it a graphic Apart from that, I like your layout I shall be doing my own shortly, just as soon as I have finished other halfs 2 music websites.

Hi William Just had a look at your website on firefox browser & it worked OK. I tried all the links - all the ones for the Waite/Ashman line just took me back to your home page but the others worked fine. The photo links - very few worked - perhaps you are still working on them? Best Wishes Liz

A couple of other things just occured to me. None of your pages will validate as you haven't put a doctype in them. W3C validator is here http://validator.w3.org Can you knock together a stylesheet. One you have, then altering fonts, text colours, alignments etc is easy peasy as you only have to change the stylesheet. If you do, make sure you set the font size of <body> to 100%. This will mean everything is 100% size text unless you state otherwise (eg.heading 1 font size=120%) css can be a pain to set up but it's a dream once it's done. And yes, a bit of colour wouldn't go amiss on the site (don't go potty though, subtle colours will do, not yellow text on a black background) You'll get spam to that email address whichever way you do it - the bots trawl for mailto: links as well as things with the twiddly at sign in. Looked at in opera 7.2, none of your links are visually identifiable, and it's not till you move your mouse over one that the cursor alters. The blue on the home page, in IE it's mid blue with single thick dark bue border. In opera it's mid blue but double thin dark blue border. It's all to do with how IE renders things. Jools

Still don't think the surnames in your surname list stand out enough. They are all too crammed together and too close to each other and still rather small. They need to be far more bold. Print in your trees is a little on tiny side too but just about readable. Cheers, Horatia

Wulliam, I suppose I don't really like picking holes as you have done a lot more than I have; but I can understand why you want constructive criticism. :-) Cheers, Horatia

Hi, I'd back up what was said before. When I managed to get onto a tree I felt the urge to click on another name rather than click back and back and then fine the name again. Is it possible to hyperlink from names in the tree?

Wulliam

Wulliam Report 20 Jun 2006 21:16

Holes picked is exactly what I want - I don't want to make a massive site and then painstakingly go back through every one of millions of pages fixing things. I'd rather it was right from the start! So thankyou - I think some colour probably is called for! William

I think the website is rather too white. It lacks colour and pictures. I agree that the surnames are too small but who am I to pick holes in your website? I took the easy way out and have a Tribal Pages account! Cheers, Horatia

Wulliam Report 20 Jun 2006 20:34

Hi Jools, Thanks - am working on these now. I decided not to have a clickable email as apparently these can be picked up automatically and then be deluged with spam. The way I've done it means that a human has to re-type it. But the other points are very helpful. Any other thoughts, anyone? William

Jools Report 20 Jun 2006 19:56

Your list of surnames you hope to find - font is way too small (even on largest font in IE). Need to make it bigger. Remember to give each page a title (not template as it is now). On the contact page, don't type your email address, use a mailto: link and put the email addy in that as in <A href='mailto:cummingwj*at*h------*com'>Contact Me</A>

Hi All, I wonder if some of you could take a look at my new rootschat site which can be found at wulliam*rootschat*net and tell me what you think. I know that many of the pictures are failing to load at present - something to be worked on. How does it show up on browsers other than Internet Explorer? How many links failed to work? - which ones? Any thoughts at all would be most helpful as I try to make it as good in structure as I can. Is it easy to follow? Thanks! William PS You can even appear on the Comments page!! - please say if you'd rather not. Have also posted this on 'General' board.
