Find dads natural dad on little info?

Hi Linda! (There you are!!! lol) You said above: ''although I assumed he was born with his mothers maiden name it would appear he actually took the name of his father Lebeter.'' If you have seen your dad's actual birth cert, stop reading here, but......Just as a matter of interest for you.......You said JIL was married to someone else and not to your dad's mum. And that you have seen the birth reg indexed under Lebeter for your dad. Have you looked to see if it's indexed separately under his mum's maiden name as well?? if his birth is ONLY indexed under Lebeter, this tells you that whoever regisiered the birth told a little white lie and said JIL and your dad's mum were married to each other! However, if your dad's name appears TWICE in the index, under Lebeter and separately under mum's maiden name, then this means they told the truth about not being married to each other, but also that JIL must have attended the registration with JIL's mum in order that his name appear on the certificate. If mum had gone to the reg office alone and said she was single, she would not have been allowed to give the father's name and the birth would have been indexed under her surname only. Sorry for rambling! Merry

OK just realised that th Eliza and Isaac you refer to is actually JIL parents - sorry for the mix up. Thanks for that info as I can now try and get a little further. I've joined a genealogy site so I can look through alot of records now but what the heck am I actually looking for?????

So sorry about the delay in replying. Thank you Portland Rose for giving me a nudge. I've managed to find out a little more info on my dads natural fathers side of the family. It appears James Isaac Lebeter wasn't Irish after all. Thanks you for the DOB for JIL, I had found out roughly when this was but with your info I can now apply for a birth cert and I'll finally have something to start with. I also have his DOD - this was in sussex which another reason I couldn't find him. JIL wife Eliza was actually not my fathers natural mum - Oops! It appears he had an affair which resulted in my father and a full sister who unfortunately died at less than a year old. Although I now have some info on JIL I'm stumped as to JIL parents at the mo as I haven't got his birth cert yet so any info would be appreciated there. My fathers exact date of birth was 30.09.1936 and although I assumed he was born with his mothers maiden name it would appear he actually took the name of his father Lebeter. Anyway thanks for all the help so far, I wouldn't have even been able to get this off the ground without it and apologies once again for not replying sooner, I promise I'll keep a closer eye on this thread in the future.

Not yet! Not much else anyone can do really anyway. No point in trawling anything when we don't know when her father was born...... It just seems soooo strange that she seems to know exactly how old he was (or her guestimate was spot on), but obviously hadn't seen the GRO birth entry. Mysterious?! Only thing I did do was look for a James Lebeter marrying up to the end of 1920 on Family Relatives. Result - Nil! Merry

Thanks Rose..... So that suggests she already had the data I posted??? (UPDATE - Maybe not, as she has Ireland as his place of birth) Linda.....if you want to find a death or marriage for him then the only way is to trawl the GRO indexes. He doesn't appear to have died after 1983. Merry

Linda's entered him on this site as being born in 1896 so this must be the correct one. Rose

Is the above man too early? When was your father born? Merry

About 95% of the IGI entries for Lebeter are in Derbyshire! There's less than 100 people with that surname on each census......vittually all of the around Derbyshire. Merry

So, if he was Irish, this isn't him then? Name: James Isaac Lebeter Year of Registration: 1899 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Basford County: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire Volume: 7b Page: 254 Pretty unusual name. What time frame are we aiming at? Merry

How do I find a family member without having too much info to go on? My fathers natural father was James Isaac Lebeter, I know where he was living at the time of my fathers birth (his mother later dies and he was adopted out) and I know where he was working (Notts highways) but that is about it. We believe he may have been an Irish drunk as my dads adopted dad seemed to know him (dead now though). Any help greatly appreciated as I'm desperately trying to trace him. Thanks
