Jilly, I had problems last week on Scotsp. Go to 'my details' and look at the browser settings - whatever it is make sure it's enabled. Mine was Activex but I had to change to Java as I couldn't view, managed to change back again though as Activex is better.

he married Agnes McCann in 1905 in Greenock...but the marraige dont show up at Register House as its a something or other marriage (cant remember the proper term) Unfortunately I've got no earthly idea when or where he married Miss Jamieson!!! I always said this would be the dead end lolol

I have found one in Greenock east who was 35 in 1901and he was married to Isabella Golding . All it says is that he was born in Ireland. Is this any good? Jill

Hi Jill....I think I have credits although outdated ones on Scotlands People site but the viewer wont work for me to be able to see.... I know he married great Granny in 1905 in Greenock...and she originated from Campbeltown...so I would think he must have moved to somewhere around that area....

Jill Report 26 Jun 2006 20:01

Have you tried looking on scotlandspeople at the 1901 census? If you think he was in Scotland before 1901and you can give me a bit of detail like where in Scotland, I could check for you as I have a few credits left. Jill

well the only definate thing I know is that he married twice...second time to my great granny.....and that his dad was James too....other than that the details are all very very sketchy indeed!! but anything is worth a try lol

Ah ... the family story was that my great-Granny Susan McCusker came form Galway. Nice idea - she married Great-Grandad (English) in Ireland before 1881; on the 1881 census and 1891 in England her birthplace was given as Ireland - not helpful! The 1901 census said she was born in Dublin!

thanks Joy!! a great aunt seems to think her dad came from Donegal or Belfast...and I just spoke to mums cousin on the fone and he said the same! Have looked and looked in Register House in Edinburgh and he was definately not born in Scotland...so I'm working on a hunch that its where they reckon somewhere in Ireland.... No idea how they come up with two different places tho !

What makes you think Donegal or Belfast, Jilly, and have you found him on the 1901? And I shall nudge some Irish tips threads for you.

Have discovered that my great grandad was born in either....Donegal or Belfast areas. Unfortunately I cant find out exactly which it is but if any one could point me in the right sort of direction for look ups in those areas I would be extremely grateful. His name was James McLachlan and he was born around 1865 to a James McLachlan and Ellen or Helen Hood we think! He moved over to Scotland before 1905. Any help tips or ideas would be fantastic Thank you Jilly x
