Don´t think you will get any further on this until you order Mary Wood´s marriage certificate.

just to set record straight Joanne elizabeth ann fowles was the daughter of Mary bligh and george fowles, mary bligh married george fowles in 1904, but Mary Wood was already born to Ann Bligh before she married george fowles, her father was definitly wood dont know first name,Aunty Mary wood was born in 1901 registered firstquarter 1902,wheather she was married out of wedlock we do not know because with my mother and aunty mary, it was always hushed up, they would never talk about there upbringing all we knew was that they were 'stepsisters and that they had the same mother, but I do believe Aunty mary (Wood) did not come to live with the fowles until mum was about four that would be in 1908, who was Mary Woods Father?

The first thing you need to do is to get Mary Wood´s marriage certificate - that will show her father´s name and occupation. You can then work back from there. Order from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ remember to tick the box stating you have the GRO reference - cost seven pounds (Georgina has give you the reference)

Most family stories have more than a grain of truth in them, but once you rely on people's memories a few of the details can be remembered incorrectly. If you note down at each stage WHERE your information came from, and test it with certificates, and as you have done, ask again if the facts don't fit, then a better picture of your family will start to emerge. Happy hunting!

Christine - that was an interesting search you did there - I didn´t realise that facility was available (have just been to ukbmd and checked it out!). Might be worth putting up a thread about it - am sure others would find it useful.

George Fowles is shown as marrying Mary, not Ann, Bligh in 1904.

Elaine

Elaine Report 1 Jul 2006 09:37

How do you know that Ann Bligh was Mary Wood´s mother?

Elaine

Elaine Report 1 Jul 2006 09:36

There is a birth registration for Mary Wood in the first quarter of 1902 Salford 8d 106 Births did not have to be registered immediately and you often find their registration in the following quarter - so this MIGHT be your Mary.

Joanne You posted a query about this yesterday and I replied saying you needed to get her birth certificate. nell

Phoenix Report 1 Jul 2006 09:30

Joanne Do you have any of the following: 1. Birth certificate for Mary Wood 2. Marriage certificate for Ann 3. Birth certificate for any other of the children It seems unlikely that Mary had a birth certificate in the surname of Wood if her mother's surname was Bligh unless her mother was married to a Mr Wood at the time.

Joanne

Joanne Report 1 Jul 2006 09:29

I can not find her details anywhere on the birth pages, we know she was born on the 19th November 1901 We think she was born in Manchester/Salford area, she lived in Worsley up until her death in March 1998. Elizabeth who was Ann Bligh child was my grandmother, and I thought Mary Wood was her sister!!

try getting hold of the birth cert for Mary. find where her mum comes from and trawl the area for a Wood family who has a son around her age. Who was she living with in the 1901 census. Look for a baptism of Mary through the parish registers. There,s a few things to be getting on with. Rod

Can you answer some questions so that we might be able to help here - Have you got Mary Wood´s birth certificate.? Do you know where she was born? You say Mary´s mother was Ann Bligh - but that she married George Fowles - do you have a certificate for this? Where did you get this information from? Have you got Mary Wood´s marriage certificate - does it give any details of father on that?

WOOD Does anybody have any information on Mary Wood she was born in November 1901, we know her mums name was Ann Bligh (born around 1875/1880) but Ann Bligh married George Fowles, and they had children who were Elizebeth Ann Fowles we know was born 1904, George Fowles, Joesph Fowles, Arthur Fowles. We have always thought that mary wood parents were Ann Bligh and George Fowles. Who was Mary Woods FATHER, Mary Woods married Frank Finley round 1925/1930 we know that she had a child by the name of Veronica whoose married name was Davis. Did Ann Bligh have a child out of wedlock? confused!!!! We cannot find any information in any of the records other then that she died in March 1998
