HI, I've just recieved a marriage cert of a rellie,and they were married on christmas day 1913, was it the norm to get married on christmas day? didn't think you could do that!! Chris. |

I have two xmas day marriages both early 1900's. Both seem kind of romantic because they were for two brothers,whose mother was born on Christmas Day. Shame both brides had their first child the following April!! Glen |

Yep Mum & Dad married Xmas Day 1929. was a good day to get married cos it was holiday & people didnt have to take time off from work. Dad even then worked on a Sat cos the working week was six days. |

Some churched married people for free on Christmas day!! I think Manchester Cathedral was renowned for this and Olde Crone will tell you they married 1,785,345 couples on that day (or some other rediculously high number!! lol) in 1851 or something!! I had one on Christmas Day 1899. I couldn't help but wonder in maybe they thought that the world would end at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve with the dawning of a new century and decided to get in quick and make it legal ... |

My parents married on New Years Day in the 1950s. Shame they didn't remember which year till I started this hobby and actually looked at the certificate..... It turns out we celebrated their Silver Anniversary a YEAR EARLY back in the 70s :))))) Got their Golden right tho!!! Chris |

Christmas Day marriages were more common than you might think. For some people it was the only day off work they had in the entire year. |

I have several Christmas day Marriages and I was lead to believe that christmas day was then only day that people didn't have to work and so didn't lose a days pay and it meant people wouldn't have to take the day of to attend.......Nothing romantic unfortunatly which is a shame ........Esta |

I have a lot of marriages and baptisms on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & Boxing Day. Apart from having time off work, it was also a time in which all the relatives would be together and provide extra excuse for a kneesup. nell |
