Can anyone help me find out who lived at an address I have discovered on an Indenture dated 1889. The address is described as a messuage or dwelling house known as 6 The Nook, St James Road in the city of Liverpool. I have not yet been able to find any member of the family who lived there Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Liverpool library may have the family listed on the electrol role - but at the era you looking at it may be unlikley Ancestry will list the occupates in 1881 & you can look for the same family in 1891 & see if they're still there

Louise Thanks for looking Louise but I don't think this is the right address and certainly the names are in no way connected with mine - Jones and Stevenson. Many thanks though Judith

Many thanks Jim and Cheryl. The information you have sent me has certainly given me food for thought and now I am going to have to do some more research! Seems strange if the Sutherland family left their house to a servant but who knows! Thank you both sooo much Judith

Hi Judith Just had another look and at 2 St James Road are a family of Jones's. The head is William Jones and he is listed as a Builder and surveyor. Could there be a connection I wonder? Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, I think you could be a total star!! This sounds extremely hopeful as their son John was also a builder/architect. Is it possible for you to send me the details? Thank you so much. Judith

Hi Cheryl, It's OK I've found the details now. I think it definitely sounds hopeful and it has set me off on a new line of enquiry. Again many thanks Judith

St James Road looks like its inhabitants were quite prosperous... in 1891 theres a retired railway manager, someone living off their own means with a 21 child who is a medical student, a medical practioner, a blind ship store dealer. A lot of the houses have a servant, a couple have two. Theres a Martha Jones aged 50 who is a widower living with sarah eckersley and her husband Mr Eckersley. It looks like this Martha jones in question was born in Montgomery which is part of Shropshire I think as Ive got a few from there.

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for your note. Would it be possible for you to check who is living at 6 St James Road on the 1891 census? I am wondering whether there are still members of the Jones family residing there. You mention a Martha Jones living with the Eckersley family. What number does she live at? Oh dear, why does Jones have to be such a popular name!! Many thanks in advance for any help you can give. Judith

Hi Biddy, Many thanks for your offer of help. You mustn't go to the records office specially for me but if you do have to go anyway I should be most grateful if you could see if 3 St James Road used to be called The Nook. The people living there on the 1881 census certainly sound as though they could be connected with my family of Jones/Stevenson especially as they are involved with the building trade. However, I can't think why the address on the indenture says 6 The Nook, St James Road. Basically I have an Ann Jones (nee Stevenson) who was married to John Jones b 1813 (a builder who employed several men). They had seven children. Their eldest daughter had died by the date on the indenture (1889) and so had John but Ann has signed it and it is leaving this house at 6 The Nook St James Road to her next eldest daughter Charlotte. I haven't been able yet to discover who lived in this house previously and why Ann was in a position to leave it to her daughter. I feel if I could find out the answer to this question it would help me delve deeper back into my tree. Many thanks again for any help you can give. Judith

just typed out a big long possible explanation for your 'The Nook' but got side tracked and clicked on something else forgetting that my message would go. Briefly.... in the 1861 census theres the road number as it should and the schedule pages follow as they should. However, there are 2 sets of 2, 4 and 6 St James Roads and the second pairs schedlue numbers are out of kilter with the rest of the road. Neither occupants in 61 are jones or stevensons. one set is a williams, but its transcribed as William, but im sure on the census it says Williams. I'll mail it you anyway as theres also an unmarried wife?!? How that works I dont know unless the cesus chappie didnt belive they were. This isnt the case though in the 1891 census there was only one set of 2,4 and 6 St James Road. dont know if thats a help or a hinderence?
