Planning a trip to England in September. Thought I would like to go to Morpeth Records Centre in Northumberland as I will be staying with rellys in Newcastle. Looked on the net on Monday night and oh no!! its closed until late 2006. Is it true? Does anyone out there know any more about when it will be open and what are my alternatives? Also want to visit the National archives too.One of my ancestors was in Portland prison and I want to find out why. What should I bring with me? Any ideas to get the most out of this trip? Susan |

Yes Morpeth has closed for a while. The records have been placed in storage, but some are held at Berwick upon Tweed. If you google for Berwick Council you will get the e-mail addy. The Berwick office is open each Wednesday and Thursday. Glen |

This is the website for the National Archives planning a visit.http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/visit/plan.htm The golden rule is to do as much research online first so you know exactly what you want and where it is available. |

Thanks Josephine, I'm hoping to take a small laptop with me with all my info on it. I figured this was the only way I could have it all at my fingertips.small |

Suzie, I'm old fashioned enough to like information on paper, I would suggest printing all the important stuff off and keeping it seperate from your laptop just in case. Also if you look at the National Archives website you will see you can't take laptops with you. I would read their visiting us very carefully. |

No problem, Anne, I wasn't complaining, just wondering why it's happening so much lately. You're not the only one. |

The Northumberland Records Office is now at Woodhorn, Ashington. It's a brand new, state of the art building with lots of facilities and the staff are very helpful. Hope you find what you are looking for, good luck. |
