I am a moderator on another family history forum and I would not have deleted the word Lucille used in the context she used it. If she had said: 'You lot on this forum are b****y useless and can I have my sub money back'? I might have deleted her post but I judge a post on it's spirit and tone. Lucille's original message was very friendly and complimentary and I'm sure we have all said 'Where the B****y hell is that place! The b****y word said in that tone in my view was acceptable and I personally would not have deleted the post. But GR obviously have other rules! ;-) I would also have remembered that the word is only a mild expletive in this country and not really an expletive at all in Lucille's native country - but that's just me! :-) The F & C words are of course offensive and I would delete those words without any hesitation. The spirit and tone of the post is what counts (IMHO) ;-) Anyway, I'm off to bed! Night Cobbers! ;-) Cheers, Horatia PS Lucille - carry on posting mate! :-)

Lucille I have just woken up, didn't know all this was going on while I slept!! Having lived in Oz for many years I understand, it is not a word that people would find too offensive in everyday language over there. Let's face it there are lots more far more explicit words that are used daily by some and most people don't even turn a hair. Over here (U.S.) they seem to find the word quaint and are amused to hear it used, and it did after all come from By the Blood of My Lady as Carol has said. So the meaning is not obscene or a synonym for anything vulgar. I am a Brit through and through but I can get quite turned off by watching some of the British tv which is offered here on BBC. Some of the 'comedy' shows are very rude and very explicit. I have had people comment that they are surprised the very 'proper English' would have such material on their tv. So what it comes down to is different attitudes and social rules in different places across the world. I realise that GR don't want us to use such words on the site for fear of offense, but you dealt with it in the proper way. Don't give up on the boards because of this Lucille, there are wonderful people on here, including some of those who don't like the word, who will always be happy to help you in your searching. With absolute tongue in cheek I have to own up and say I, I didnt remove the offending word. I didnt get a chance. I typed my little blurb and went off to make dinner and get my 2 little boys ready for bed... When I got back to it I was gob smacked (that means shocked an I dont think it's rude...hope not!!!) to see the reaction it caused! AND that 'IT' had been replaced by ??? The GR Big Brother must have been on the ready. Probably just as well cos I have been known to be stubborn and it not have been removed for me I might have left it and been divorced, disfellowshipped and ex-communicated from GR I wont use it again...promise... :)

never though of it as a bad word It takes more than just a simple 'b*****' (a corruption of 'By your Lady', a religious exclamation from the Middle Ages') to swear like a Brit.

lol Heather.......I would never SAY ''blimey'', but not because I think it's too rude.....more the opposite - I'm afraid I use much ruder words these days :o((......I use that word on here because I think it sounds sort of old fashioned and a bit square!! (Wrong again??) I also say flippin' 'eck on here, which I would also never say.......I would imagine I would be laughed off the face of the earth by people I know, if I used these words! But maybe I'm wrong again? When I was 18 I once heard someone say the b*****y word and was so shocked!! I also had never heard anyone say ''Ta'' for Thankyou before..........(such innocence!) Merry

it is so easy to offend - i didnt see it, but when it was pointed out, you zapped it- that was all that was needed. I remember my mum slapping my legs hard when, when i was about 8 , when I called my brother a berk. apparently its a shortened form of cockney rhyming slang for berkshire hunt ( which rymes with a rude word which i wouldnt use that begins with c)

I just took it that people were meaning GR would remove your thread if you didn't remove the ****** word, rather than they were offended!! GR are very sensitive about swearing.....anything else anyone does is often ignored, but not that!!!! Merry

Don't worry, - you have explained and deleted the offending words. I think sometimes, across Continents, or in different Countries, some words appear more offensive than others. I am always amazed at the dreadful language used in American films, yet they appear very prudish about explicit 'touchy feely' or sexual content. We all have different upbringings and all differ. Hi Lucille. I have been reading your other thread with intrest. I missed the `offending` word(I think that`s how you spell it) but can hazard a guess as to what it was. Don`t worry. I see that a few of the good people on GR put you right in a polite way and you responded in a proper manner. I have seen the advert that you have mentioned and i was quite suprised at what the youg lady said! I am only 52. Old by what my grand children say. Anyway good luck on your hunt and please don`t be put off asking for help on here. Vanessa

Oh! Fiddle...! I'm EVER SO SORRY!!! I honestly truly didn't mean to offend anyone. And Just to Explain why I wrote that since it evoked SO much attention.... The Australian Tourist Commision produced an advertisement a time ago with that slogan...'So where the ..... are you?!' spoken by a pretty wholesome girl on one of our stunning beaches. It stirred up a hornet's nest and was banned. But everyone knew about Australia, it got more attention & coverage than the Australian Tourism Board could have anticipated I think? I thought it pretty funny as I recall first hearing the word spoken by my parents who were Cockneys from Battersea. They also both served in the British Army & Airforce in WWII They both worked and paid taxes. They are good, god fearing folk. I advise some of you people to look into the original meaning of the word and by WHOM it was used. Some of your comments made me out to be some common pleb of absolutely no class or intellect. Just because some people think outside the square & sometimes miss the ... obvious doesnt mean they are stupid. THANK YOU to those who advised me of sites where I can find out what I need to know. I'm 43yrs old and have only had a laptop and the internet connected for 2months so yes I am in-experienced and although I did try searching yahoo for maps I didn't come across anything helpful at the time...do you know how many sites come up?!!! And SINCE I joined this site and everyone is always offering HELP ...I thought I'd ask. Pity there's always someone out there who's picking out the negatives...best not to waste your energy here folks.. INVEST your energy as others do... in finding all the beautiful POSITIVE aspects of this life... with Honesty Openess & Willingness. LIFE is & should be a LEARNING CURVE.
