I've got 3 Barker brothers who all called one of their sons Herbert Barker and these were all born between 1879 and 1889. One of these Herberts is the brother of my grandmother Agnes. My dad fondly remembers his uncle Herbert who was married to a lady called Teresa but we dont know if this Herbert was Agnes' true brother or her cousin who she went to live with after her parents died when she was 6. I guess I need to find the marriage between Herbert and Teresa to confirm his father but there is nothing on FreeBMD. When I started this hobby I already had the tree back as far as 1901 so I don't know how best to search for marriages after that. Has anyone got any tips? The Barkers seem to have flitted between Hertfordshire and Islington most of the time. Thanks, Lyla

what sort of when after 1901 are they likely to have married? when was Agnes born ?- if she went to live with them when she was 6, and he was already married , there must have been quite some gap in age

For post 1901 freebmd is far from complete. You have to use the ancestry website,it is free to use. You need to check each year quarter by quarter using the full index, not the partial version,a bit time consuming but not difficult. And of course name search the GR site. Glen

You can search the Complete Marriage Index on Ancestry for free (even if you don't have a subscription to Ancestry). The address you need is:- http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx remove the brackets. You need to click on 'view image' for every qtr. in every year for the name you are looking for. Kath. x

Does your dad remember roughly when Teresa (Theresa?) died? If you could find her death reg, and it was after 1969, it might give you her date of birth. Tying down her maiden surname (from FreeBMD, hopefully) would make finding the marriage ref a lot easier! Merry

Woh, only went to make a cup of tea and look at all your replies already! Agnes was born in 1894 and she is with uncle George and family including cousin Herbert in 1901 but unfortunately Dad doesnt know anything more about Herberts wife Teresa. It sounds as if I'll have to trawl through the marriage indexes for Herberts marriage but how can I cross reference it to Teresa when I dont know her maiden name? There is probably no easy answer but if there is please tell me. Lyla

might be a bit trial and error and an odd wrong cert in the hunt ,but just be glad her name is Teresa , not Mary or Elizabeth!

If the marriage was after 1911 - the spouses surname appears in the index. So for example, say you get a quarter where Herbert Barker married someone surname Bloggs in West Ham You would then be able to look for all the Theresa Bloggs married in that qtr and district and see if the name next to them is Barker.

From 1912 onwards you will see the Bride's surname in the marriage index alongside Herbert Barker's name. You will just have to check each time, on each bride's surname, to see if her first name was Teresa. I think marriages up to 1911 are just about complete on FreeBMD. Maybe you should look at each of those to see if there are an equal number of bride's and grooms on each page? Merry

Well I think it's definately time to certify myself right now. Not really surprising as so far 6 of my direct ancestors had senility as a cause of death . Anyway, I posted a reply and then went off to watch the end of big brother (exactly!) and now I'm back and my post has gone. I think I said something along the lines of thanks for all your tips, I will search for a marriage after 1912 and then try to find a Teresa of that name in 1901 blah blah - it all sounds very easy although I'm sure it's not. Will let you know how I get on,,,,

Hi Brenda Sorry for not coming back sooner - thanks for your help. I will grill my dad this weekend to see if he remembers anything else or knows where they lived. Unfortunately I don't know if any of the Herberts had middle names as they are just plain old Herberts on the census. Lyla

Hi Brenda I really appreciate you looking at this for me. Agnes was born in Islington in 1894 to Alfred and and Mary Barker. Son Herbert is with them in 1891 Islington aged 7. Also in 1891 are Alfreds two brothers. William and Mary are in Little Wymondley with son Herbert aged 12 and George and Mary (yes they all married a Mary) with son Herbert aged 4 in Stevenage. All Herberts are down as being born in the place they now live. By 1901 Alfred and Mary had died and Agnes went to live with George and Mary in Stevenage, while her younger sister Elsie went to live with their mum's family (or so I'm told). George and Mary are still in Stevenage and their Herbert is now 14 born Stevenage. Agnes aged 6 born Islington is down as their daughter although she is definately their niece (or so I'm told). I can find the other two Herberts in 1901. I will see if I can jog dad's memory tomorrow. Perhaps he might remember where Herbert and Theresa lived or when/where he saw them last etc etc. Thanks again Lyla

Dont know if this helps or confuses - here are the Herbert Barkers marrying between 1901-1920 in London or Herts: (well it was supposed to bring up london and herts but looks like familyrellies have bunged in some other counties.) Hi Brenda, Yes that is the death of her parents. The Herbert you found sounds like it could be her brother in which case the one dad remembers would be her cousin. Mind you there is a totally unrelated Herbert born 1880 Bedfordshire on the 1901 census so that could be him too. Too many Herberts as you say. Heather, where on earth did you find all those Herbert marriages? I tried to find a couple on FreeBMD but they aren't on there! Thanks again to you both Lyla

Thanks Brenda, yes I did know that about Elsie. Susan Harmer died soon after 1901 so somebody else must have taken her in then. Agnes died when I was a baby but I remember visiting Elsie and have photos of her. I also have a photo of Bert and Theresa but I just cant be sure which Barker family to attach them to.

Hi again Brenda My goodness you have just found 3 more children for me! I had never noted the 3 youngsters over the page. That could well be Arthur then, so now I just need to find the rest of them. There is an Alfred aged 23 in Islington who I'm sure is the oldest son. Thanks Lyla

Woo Hoo - so now I also know what happened to Alfred's sister Ann. You are a star!

Unknown Report 6 Aug 2006 20:33

Yes that fits too. His father was a carman by the time he died in 1899 so seems likely that George would have stepped in his shoes. You are doing brilliantly.

Lyla, as you know freebmd is far from complete particularly into the 20th century. familyrelatives.org have a golden period of 1866-1920 when you can name search people and also narrow it down by area etc. It is pay to view but worthwhile if you have a large year span.
