Another possibility is that Mary HAS been transcribed by FreeBMD already, but that her page number is unclear. There are these 'Mary' entries on there for York Jun 1859, so you could go through the images for them one by one and check if the page number for any of them is really 83. Marriages Jun 1859 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allen Mary Ann York 9d 77 Burgess Mary York 9d 25 Cartwright Mary York 9d 30 Clarkson Mary Ann York 9d 65 Davis Mary York 9d 88 Dennis Mary York 9d 23 Firth Mary Elizabeth York 9d 51 Garnett Mary York 9d 59 Gillespie Mary Hannah York 9d 69 Gowland Mary York 9d 68 Harland Mary York 9D 63 Harrison Mary Ann York 9d 49 Hewdey Mary York 9d 21 Hick Mary Ann York 9d 19 Hornshaw Mary Ann York 9d 5 Joyce Mary York 9d 90 Kirby Mary Anne York 9d 56 Narey Mary York 9d 84 Narey Mary York 9d 84 Ogram Mary Ann York 9d 85 PRECIOUS Mary York 9d 61 Pygus Mary Maria York 9d * Rawcliffe Mary Ann York 9d 79 Ryan Mary York 9d 90 Shackelton Mary Elizabeth York 9d 87 Slater Mary York 9d *5 Slater Mary Elizabeth Francisca Josephina York 9d 55 If you do try that, I would suggest starting with the ones which have a * in the page number on FreeBMD as they are most likely to be unclear. Also, don't forget that Mary could be her middle name or nickname - she could be called something else on her marriage cert. And, is it possible that they got married in Ireland? Gotta go, Kate.

Do you know for sure that Thomas married in 1859 in York - or are you just hoping that the marriage reference you have found is the right one ?

Kate

Kate Report 8 Aug 2006 15:17

If I understand the initial posting correctly, than what Vanessa should do is look at the marriage listings for Crane for that quarter to see if there is one matching the Thomas Flynn entry. Kate.

Can you give us the 1871 reference

Vanessa

Vanessa Report 8 Aug 2006 15:15

I can`t find him on the 1861 census but am going back onto it to have another hunt. On the 1871 census he is down as being born in Mayo Ireland. So is his wife mary. Thomas`s age is 40 and mary 33. No children on the census but that does not mean there was none on 1861. It is so frustrating trying to get the maiden names sorted by the spelling. Vanessa

Is this the couple in 1871? Name: Mary Flynn Age: 40 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831 Relation: Wife Spouses's Name: Thomas Gender: Female Where born: Ireland Civil Parish: St Dennis County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: York Sub-registration district: Walmgate ED, institution, or vessel: 15 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 60 Household Members: Name Age Mary Flynn 40 Thomas Flynn 33 If it is, could this be Thomas in 1861? In which case, the 1859 marriage is irrelevant.............. Name: Thos Flynn Age: 24 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837 Relation: Son Father's name: John Mother's name: Catherine Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Civil parish: York St Dennis County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: York Sub-registration district: Walmgate ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 140 Household Members: Name Age Thos Brown 19 Catherine Flynn 53 James Flynn 20 John Flynn 48 Matthew Flynn 22 Thos Flynn 24 Reg

Not on www.familysearch.org either. Trust her to be called Mary! If she had an unusual name you could look for her using birthplace and year from 1861 to find her in 1851 and then look in the complete indexes for her marriage in the same year and quarter as Thos and see if there is an entry with the same page number. nell

Have you traced Thomas in 1861? Where and when was he born? Reg

Richard in Perth Report 8 Aug 2006 15:10

Looked on the Ancestry images, and the ref looks like Flynn, Thomas, York, 9d 83 On FreeBMD, these are the other names on that page, that have been transcribed so far. Doesn't help much - only one female, and she's not a Mary!: Marriages Jun 1859 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lunn Edward William York 9d 83 Moore Annie York 9d 83 Skillbeck John York 9d 83 PS: YorkshireBMD marriages are only done for Leeds & Hull so far, not York :(

Kate

Kate Report 8 Aug 2006 15:09

Well, of course, one way is to order the marriage certificate - you only need one person's name for that. Or get the birth cert of one of their children, as that will tell you the mother's maiden name. I can't see him (Thomas) on Yorkshire BMD, unfortunately. According to FreeBMD's chart, the Jun 1859 quarter is not complete for marriages yet, so you could wait till it is to see if the other name turns up. It is more likely that it has not been transcribed yet than that the transcriber could not read the name. BUT, looking at FreeBMD, the transcriber couldn't read the page number for Thomas anyway, so that is what we need to figure out first. Back soon... Kate.

Vanessa Report 8 Aug 2006 15:04

I am trying to find out who married who in june 1859. Thomas Flynn married in June 1859 in York. I have looked on FreeBMD but the transcriber was unable to read or transcribe it. Is there anyway else i can look to see who he married.? He is on the census 1871 married to Mary but i need her maiden name to see if she was my great great grandmothers sister. It is the spelling of the maiden name Crane that is causing me some problems at the moment. Any advice would be great. Thankyou Vanessa
