Just remembered... Emma and Emily seem to have been used interchangeably at times. Worth watching out for Emily Harradine/Palmer or whatever. Christine

I sometimes wonder if the recent female ''Sydneys'' should really have been ''Sidonie'' (like Ms Goossens, the musician). Christine

Kate

Kate Report 26 Aug 2006 10:34

The Sidneys in my tree are all male and changed spellings between Sidney and Sydney all the time, so it seems! Sydney as a girl's name is very recent, as far as I know. Kate.

Margaret Report 26 Aug 2006 09:23

Dea No, Sydney spelt with a Y is male. I have loads of Sydney's in my family including my dad and grandad. I have only one Sidney. They are all male. Margaret

Just a bit of info here as I am too tired to follow it through any further. - Might not be connected, but: Emma Elizabeth Harradine married either: Frederick Palmer. OR Edmund John Simpson - Sept Q 1906 - Islington 1b 694? Can't find a death for Edmund Simpson, but: Frederick W Palmer died - Wandsworth March Quarter, 1911 aged 32 (therefore about the right age - b c1879) - Ref Wandsworth 1d 380. If this was the same Emma, that would have left her a widdow in 1911 - therefore might have been remarried after that to your Albert, so we would be looking for a Hollingsworth/Palmer marriage - Can't find one at the moment but I will leave it with you to explore. Have grand-daughter again tomorrow so probably be Sunday before I am on thread - will check back then. Best of Luck, Dea x

Hi Dea that is a coincidence that there is an Emma Harradine in the next road in the 1901 census. On the short certificate for Sydney Hollingsworth his second name is John born 23rd March 1913 and so in registered in the next qtr.Pancras and all of his sisters and one brother have been registered in Pancras but they were to early to have maiden name with them as Sydney was the youngest Margaret

Hi, I am wondering about this birth certificate. How do you know it relates to the one you found on Ancestry with mmn Harradine? Sydney spelt with a 'y' - I always thought was a girl's name - boys are usually spelt SIdney, with an 'I' ?? There is a Sydney J born in that quarter (which is the one you are looking at), but also a SIdney. ?? Could you give us some more details please. Dea x

re the above after my mother died 3 years ago I sent for her full birth certificate, mainly because the short one was falling apart,,I found that in addition to the two christian names she was always known by her father had saddled her with the additional christian name of Flossie. This wasn`t used on any other document and I wonder if she herself was aware of it.. Neither of my grandparents could read or write!!!

Back for a minute before I cook tea and fall asleep. Haven't found a marriage yet BUT on 1901 census - If you locate your Albert W Hollingsworth - he is in Wandsworth - Also in Wandsworth (in what appears to be the next street - Disraeli Rd., is an Emma Harradine - same age - details below: Could be a coinsidence but certainly worth a look - details below: Emma Harradine Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882 Relation: Niece Gender: Female Where born: Ashwell, Hertfordshire, England Civil parish: Wandsworth Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: Wandsworth Sub-registration district: Wandsworth ED, institution, or vessel: 4 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 19 Household Members: Name Age Amos Dobbs 52 Florence E Dobbs 12 Robena Dobbs 52 Emma Harradine 19 Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 481; Folio: 82; Page: 3. Will try to check back later. Dea x P.S. - On image - it POSSIBLY might say HOrradine ??

Have you considered mistranscriptions in the index itself? My maiden name appears incorrectly in the GRO index in the entry for my marriage! Christine

Hello Dea yes that is the one I found all my sister knows at the moment is the eldest was an Alice Hollingsworth born i think in 1904 whom when she married married became an Oaks went to live in Australia died in 1966 and has a copy of her will leaving things to her brothers and sisters naming five including Florence Albert and Sydney being the youngest. I beleive my sister is sending for the birth certificate for Sydney Margaret

A short birth cert is no use at all for genealogy purposes. All it tell you is the full name of the person and the date they were born. A full cert tells you where they were born and the parents names including the mother's maiden name. Margaret

Phoenix

Phoenix Report 25 Aug 2006 12:08

There are all sorts of alternatives: they include the mother marrying as a widow, so there is no Hollingsworth/Harradine marriage. What were the siblings names? Can their births be found? Are any family members alive? Are there any photos? Does anyone remember the parents? Where did the family live and what was the father's occupation? Did anyone speak with an accent? There might have been no marriage, a later one than expected, a marriage abroad/at sea/army marriage. It is worth finding out as much as possible about the recent family as possible, then buying the long certificate for the extra information it provides.

Hi Kate mys sister has a short birth certificate for her husbands father which says Sydney Hollingsworth looking at the his birth on ancestry it say Sydney Hollingsworth born March 1913 mothers maiden name Harradine and she does know he was the youngest of six. The father was Albert William Hollingsworth but nowhere can I find a marriage for a Hollingsworth and Harradine, unles his first wife died and he had another baby by another woman if you see what I mean Thanks Margaret

Margaret, looking at my great-grandfather's short birth certificate, it has his first name(s) and surname, and I presume that the surname is derived from the full certificate in the following way: Father's surname if parents are married to each other, otherwise mother's surname. But of course if the mother said she was married and wasn't really, the surname will be the one that she said was her married surname, if you see what I mean. Kate.

Having a short birth certificate would it give any indication of the mother being married or could they just use fathers name thankyou Margaret
