Just received a bunch of certs, and might just have a chance to link a family. Death of Clara Jane Gritton (spinster) in 1905 aged 84 (she was born in Staffs to Joseph Thomas Gritton and Maria Jepson) she died in Sydenham, London. James C Lewis, nephew of 66 Fairhazel Gardens, South Hampstead is the informant. Stupid question, but brain's gone dead....where shall I start. (can't find a marriage female Gritton to male Lewis). ?

Just wondering if this could be a different generation. Maybe he was a great nephew? Gwyn

I think it's one of those situatins where you try and chase each one of the Grittons forwards from birth,they are your main line aren't they? If you can fairly accurately place each one of Claras siblings and work forwards it might show how he fits. Unless of course he is really a nephew through marriage to one of Claras brother/sister in laws. I wonder if he was at the same address in 1901? Glen

Hi Glen The Gritton's are the bain of my life.....trawled through the BVRI yesterday - still yawning!! Clara Jane and her sister Emma remained spinsters, as did their elder sister Eleanor (all of them schoolmistresses at Epsom & Brighton). An elder sister called Maria Jepson Gritton, married James Ayres from Cardiff (found that in a newspaper). I just cannot link my Thomas Jepson Gritton to them. I could cry.......... Rgds, Jeanne

Hi Reggie Joseph Thomas & Maria were the Masters of the Union Workhouse in Epsom in 1841 & 1851. Katherine Stanley Gritton (her christened name) was the Nurse, but she vanishes altogether after 1841. It is all very odd really: Joseph Thomas Gritton -m- Maria Jepson (daughter of George Jepson, Prebendary of Lincoln). These children are born in Staffs: William (1816) Catherine Stanley (1819) Barbara (1820) Clara Jane (1821) Eliza (1823) Josephine Fanny (1828) Henry Septimus (1827) - Joseph has a brother called Septimus who married Maria Jepson's sister Jane. There is also an Eleanor Gritton (spinster) can't find her birth, and Emma Gritton (spinster) born in Hornsey, can't find her birth, Maria Jepson Gritton (abt 1808) married James Ayres from Cardiff in 1827 - can't find her birth, even though her marriage was announced giving parental details. Finally, my Tom Jepson Gritton - census puts his birth in Chester (1861) and Liverpool (1871). The father, Joseph Thomas Gritton in born 1782 in Hull - I have his brothers, sisters and parents. It is so frustrating.

Hello darlin' I was going to give you a rest till tomorrow, hope you and Adeline (found one in my family during the week!!) are both doing well. These are both my Clara. Have been tracking a James C Lewis this morning, as he is shown as the informant at Clara's death in 1905 (got the cert this morning). James C Lewis is noted as her nephew, so thought it might give me a lead to my Tom Jep. I have found that his mother was Sarah A Lewis abt 1811, born in Liverpool - as was my Tom Jep. Got the BVRI yesterday, still trying to get my head round it !! Jeanne xx

1851- HO 107/1642/539/11 Emma Gritton (1831 Hornsey) is shown with the Lewis family, but says she is sister to head of household John Lewis, born Bergholt, Suffolk ????? Can't yet find the Lewis family in 1841 - back to it... I don;t get it!!!!!

Sarah Ann Gritton -m- John Lewis 26 Jan 1835, Old Church, St Pancras Yippee!!! Sarah Ann Gritton must be Tom Jep's sister (both born Liverpool within a couple of years of each other). So, I have tied Sarah Gritton to Clara Gritton and Emma Gritton. James C Lewis is her son and nephew to Clara Jane. But I can't find Sarah Ann's birth......... It's OK folks, I am just rambling to myself at the moment!!
