Hi Ozibird - Thanks for trying - I can't find them at all. The only thing I have been able to find is birth Eleanor Langstone 1882 Buckinghamshire,Gloucestershire,Oxfordshire and then her marriage nothing on any of the census at all - I wondered if they went to Wales or elsewhere - they seemed to just disappear - beats me. Not sure that if the address is County Gaol Road that everyone living in it would necessarily be connected with the jail, just that that's the road that leads to the jail. A licensed victualler was a publican - he was able to sell alcohol. He may or may not have been connected with the jail, he could have been running a pub. Applications for licences to sell alcohol are at the county records offices. nell

I Just had a thought. It must be the County Gaol her husband Frank Harry Lewis Hatcher is a Chief Constable so probably met her while doing his job - silly me I did not even think of that I will keep looking on the census to get to the bottom of it but I bet that is the answer. Leigh

You are all terrific, Thanks everyone I have checked on the 1901 census for Eleanor Langstone but cannot find her at all, so cannot find out if her family was living there or not - I am supposed to be mopping the floor before my husband comes home but keep coming back to check on the site - Am getting nowhere. I have one of my g aunts births registered from county gaol in Worcester, still cant find out why. Any clues anyone? Ellen

My first thought when I read the thread title is that it was a misreading of County Gaol (or as we'd say nowadays jail, prison). As far as I am aware there are no English words that begin Gd. nell

Leigh, There's no county 'gdol' in the UK. Are you sure that's what it says? Where and when did the marriage take place? Rose

I have just received a marriage certificate and it states that the bride was living in County Gdol. Would someone one please enlighten me as to where County Gdol is, I am sorry but living in Australia my geograpy of U.K. is basic - but I am learning fast and getting better. Thank you - Leigh
