Of the Herbert Hutchings marriages on the Ancestry copy of the FreeBMD database in the years leading up to 1910, I'd suggest the most likely would be: Herbert Hutchings 1903 Oct-Nov-Dec 5c-672 Bridgwater Somerset brides: Mary Ann V Callow & Emily Ella Solomon other groom: Harry Webber Christine

When you're using a single county on that system you can search as many years as you like at one go. I just put in wildly exaggerated parameters (marrying between ages 10 and 80, say - or up to the date limit available). That way I can feel confident I've included all the possibles. I have given up assuming that people married according to the received conventions - there are far too many instances recorded on GR where that just hasn't been true! Christine

Julie - yes we found it, but thanks for looking. Christine - I'm not aware of him being married before, but it does look like a possibility now. I had looked on Yorks BMD, but because I had no idea where in the country the marriage was, I hadn't gone that far forward - I'll know next time, won't I?

Had Herbert been married before? If his first wife hadn't died until late 1920s, they might have decided not to run the risk of an earlier marriage being shown up as bigamous. Christine

www.ukbmd.org.uk has a whole list of searchable Local BMD sites - along with a lot of other useful info. They have the URLs sorted both by County and by type (census, BMD, one-name, ...) - and also the ones which are national. Christine PS - you can order from the Local RO via that site (same fees) - the reference (not the same ref as GRO) acts as a link to an order-form.

They have a good sprinkling of HUTCHINGS births on the site, too: in the range 1901-1940 it's mostly ''Drypool'' area of Sculcoates, but there are a couple in Southcoates and one in Myton. Christine

If the mother is Jane Brown then she wasn't married,if it states her as formerly Brown that would suggest a marriage Glen

Julie - no, sorry, I meant to say that. She was unmarried in 1901 and he can't be found - I think he may have been away at war. So that does narrow it down to after 1901, but still I can't find anything.

I have been trying to find the marriage for my great grandparents for ages and am having no luck. It's driving me mad and wondered if anyone could suggest anything else I could try. The marriage is for Herbert Hutchings born c1881 in Dorchester Dorset and Jane Brown born c1875 in Tintagel Cornwall. I don't know where or when they got married, as they eventually settled in Hull, Yorkshire. I also know that Jane was working in Kent in 1901. Their first child was born in 1909 in Hull. Can anyone suggest anything I could try that I might not have thought of? I've looked on Ancestry and have tried variations on names, etc and even went to Cornwall to look there, but no luck. Victoria.
