Nicely spotted OC.....lol now amended. Thankyou. Little Nell. I already have her 1st husband. It was George Horton. Her 3rd husband was John Horton. Georges younger brother. (1) George Horton...marriage 1856 to Matilda Powell. (2) John Pool/Poole....marriage 1865 to Matilda Horton(widow) (3) John Horton.....marriage 1882 to Matilda Poole (widow) 1st marriage has nothing as her fathers name. 2nd marriage says the same...nothing! 3rd marriage says fathers name was James Parkes (deceased) Now for the mystery..... I have both birth certs for the step sons (the ones found on 1871 census) Abel and Chas Horton. Father..George Horton,Mother Matilda Horton nee Powell. So why did she say on her 3rd marriage that her father was James parkes???? It's definatly the same Matilda as one of the witnesses to the 3rd marriage is my g.grandmother Emma Poole! and Matilda had another daughter in this marriage and called her...Matilda Emma! b1883.Mothers maiden name...Parkes! I give up!!!!! . . for now...lol

John Pool's father was called HORTON?????? OC

I suggest following up on Joseph Horton, the witness. He may lead you back to Matilda's first husband.

Marriage Cert arrived today :-) John Pool age 33 Bachelor. lockmaker. Fathers name Josiah Horton. Lockmaker.Oops! sorry josiah POOL...lol Matilda Horton age 27 widow. NO FLIPPIN NAME FOR HER FATHER! just a drawn line...flippin woman!!! Witnesses were Joseph and Ann Horton. I'm sure it's the right marriage so many many thanks for that Fiona. Gerri xxx

Hi did you see the marriage just above Jim's 1841 details? Only you say you can't find Matilda's marriage to John Poole so thought you might have missed it while reading all the info. Also some of the Poole children were not Matilda's so mothers name on the certificate would be something else, do you know who John Pooles first wife was? Regards Fiona. Update: Untill 1875 it wasn't law to register birth. But as some of the children had a different mother you might have the right birth certificate for some of the earlier Poole children if you ordered them. Given that Matilda did not marry John Poole untill 1865 it looks like only Emma was theirs and as Matilda was a widow in 1881 without knowing when John died you can't be sure Mary Jane was his daughter. I had one who had a son 2 years after her husband died.

Thanks for all your help but I already have all this info except the 1841 from Jim.Thanks Jim. I keep putting Matilda away and try to forget her but she keeps popping up again! I have been thinking of my Matilda ALL day and this is what I think happened... She must have been an orphan and sent to live with Mr and Mrs Green. Maybe Mr and Mrs green died or got too old to care for the youngster and she was then sent to live with Able Fletcher. I have a marriage cert between Matilda Powell and George Horton 1856.Aged 18. Her Fathers bit is blank. I also have Abels and Chas Hortons birth certs. Mother Matilda Horton nee Powell. 1856 and 1859. Then! on the 1871 census I find my Matilda with the two boys as stepsons with John Poole and four more kids! (my lot) Cannot find that marriage or any of the 4 births. 1882 Matilda is married to John Horton (got cert) and a witness is MY Emma Poole! Matilda Poole is down as a widow and her fathers bit says...James PARKES (deseased) They have another daughter 1883 and name her Matilda Emma, Mothers name Matilda Horton nee PARKES!!! Just to confuse me even more.....I have a sneeky feeling that Goerge and John Horton were brothers! Thats another story... I wonder if cos she diddnt know her real father....she might have invented this James parkes? maybe he was someone that was kind to her during her young days? Or...maybe she just wanted to impress her new hubby as he was 12 years her junior lol Back to the original question.... How did they get away with not reg the births of four children? Given the ages of the 2 step sons it's likely that John was married before and some if not all the poole children are his first wifes and not Matilda's. Cant find a marriage of Matilda (whoever) to a john Poole. How did they get away with this?....no births! no marriage??? OK I can understand them not getting married (tut! tut!)...but not declaring the childrens births????? Would they have had to pay a fine?
