Heidi I can find the family group of Joseph and Mary Redfern in the 1851 and 1861 by searching for Joseph Redfern born in 1816 (give or take two years) living in Derbyshire. More interestingly they can be found in 1841 in All Saints Derbyshire. The family are listed as: Joseph Redfean 25 Mary Redfean 20 Joseph Redfean

Heidi I can find the family group of Joseph and Mary Redfern in the 1851 and 1861 by searching for Joseph Redfern born in 1816 (give or take two years) living in Derbyshire. Mary Ann's father Joseph is listed as being from Shirland, Derbyshire in all census'. Mary is listed as from St Peters, Derbyshire More interestingly they can be found in 1841 in All Saints Derbyshire. The family are listed as: Joseph Redfean 25 Mary Redfean 20 Joseph Redfean 3 Ann Topham 1801 Thomas Topham 1791 Thomas Topham 1821 These Tophams were butchers and born in Derbyshire. A Joseph Redfern marries in Mar 1838 in Derby, just in time for Joseph' birth? There is a Mary Cotton on the same page. Derby vol19 p355. In the FamilySearch website there is a listing for the birth of Joseph Redfern in Shirlands, Derbyshire on 19 Oct 1817. Father is George Redfern and mother is Sarah (twin) Bower. They have eight children. George was born in 1791 and was christened on 30/3/1788 in Bonsall, Derby (a bit of an anomally with the birth year) father is Thomas Refern mother Hannah Redfern. He died on 5/6/1847 in Higham, Derby. He was buried on the 11/6/1849 (again a bit of an anomally in the listed years. This information goes back generations. They have a pedigree family listing on familysearch.org. If you need help using the website let me know. Hope this helps Catherine

I am Somewhat confused...how Are the Tophams related to the redferns in 1841...as My gggf George married Mary A redfern as says my original message? xx

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Oct 2006 21:28

Not sure if they were related or just families living together, unfortunately the 1841 census doesnt give a relationship. Its possible that they were old family friends and thats how they came to marry - interesting find though! Catherine

Chesterfield is a long way from Derby. Is this the George Topham who's a grocer in Whittington in 1881? His wife Mary Ann is given as age 27, born Staveley, which is near Chesterfield. 1861 has a Mary Ann Redfern age 6 born and living in Staveley.
