How Do I change mother!!

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Margaret Report 17 Nov 2006 13:46

I have a male ancestor with children on my tree, now found that there are different mother's for these children. Added the right mother for a couple of them, but GR has given this mother to them all!! The add a parent option will not work for me to correct this. Under the old tree system, I could do it, but not now. And, I would have to delete a hell of a lot to make this correction. Any ideas. Very frustrated Margaret.

Jeanette Report 17 Nov 2006 14:04

Fee Macro just put Unknown Unknown for husband then you will be able to add children

Jeanette, Thanks, tried the old tree and still won't let me do it. I'm sure there was an option in the green bit, my immediate family or something and that must have been how I did it, without deleting a shed load of ancestors. Ah, well, onwards and upwards as they say. Cheers Margaret.

Export your tree as a gedcom - modify it in a 'family tree'program and reimport it to this site - then you have a backup too Peter

Go to the old tree, click on the person whose parents you want to change, then click on the Parents tab, which gives you a drop-down list of parents from which you choose the correct pair. One of the major problems with the new tree is that it doesn't seem to have this Parents tab, so you can't change incorrect parents.

Margaret Report 18 Nov 2006 15:51

Peter, I have already exported as a gedcom and realised that this was possibly the only way to do it. Also, thanks Mary, will try your tip first. Thanks to all. Cheers Margaret.

If you give the father multiple partners you can choose in old tree which child belongs to which mother by scrolling down to 'parents'

I've gone into the old tree, scrolled down to the Parents tab, and it isn't highlighted, so cannot click on to change anything!! Getting absolutely nowhere. I think the easiest would be to import my gedcom after correction. Thanks all. Cheers Margaret.

The GR tree program can't cope with complex relationships. Invest six quid in Family Tree Maker 2005 (from Morrisons, ASDA, Wilko and other well-known genealogy stores). You can then do complex relationships and corrections on your computer and upload a corrected tree to GR. J

Thanks John, Anything considered, as i'm also finding GR struggling with the complex. It's the lack of options now they've changed it all. Think I have Family tree maker 2005, sure I downloaded it, or is that not the same? Margaret.

When you click on the Parents tab in the old tree, you'll get the message 'It is not possible to change this relation's parents' if the person only has one set of parents. Before you can change the parents, there must be at least two mothers or fathers entered. Suppose Fred Bloggs marries Jane and Elizabeth, and you accidentally show his son John as the child of Elizabeth. You'll have to add Jane as a wife to Fred, then click on John, then on the Parents tab, and you'll see a dropdown box that shows two sets of parents: Fred and Jane and Fred and Elizabeth. You just select Fred and Jane, and you'll find John's been attached to them. I've done this loads of times with the old tree, and it's always worked. Pity the new tree doesn't have the same feature.

I think I've just realised what you're doing wrong - I couldn't understand what you meant by highlighting. The Parents tab is *not* the Add Parents command on the right-hand side, just before Add Sibling. It's the last tab on the right *below* the name of the person whose parents you're trying to change. The tabs are Details - Extra Details - Photos - Parents. You need to click on Parents.

Thanks Mary, I'll try that later, didn't realise there was another way, understand now. I just couldn't see any drop down option. I've been on here 4 years and never had this prob before, so much simpler way back then, and the thought of having to delete so many!! I'll let you all know if I manage it. Cheers Margaret.

Thanks to everyone who replied with help, Especially Mary who spelled it out for me, done it, no problem, so easy, why on earth I didn't think of that, i'll never know. I'll just have to be careful how I add my rellies now, once the old tree goes, unless GR add the option somehow. Great stuff, Cheers and thanks again. Margaret.

Nudge for Brian

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 7 Jan 2007 15:24

They've now added a change parents command to the new tree: go to Edit Tools - Change Parents.

Thanks Mary, I hadn't seen that option, about time they made it easier!! I'd nudged this thread for Brian who was having a similar prob. Cheers Margaret.
