Hi Sarah Just been doing a bit of digging around. This is all guesswork of course! But working on the assumption that Thomas is illegitimate and Hodgson is his mother's maiden name, I took a look at the 1861 for unmarried female Hodgsons in HOSM and found 2, Mary and Elizabeth. I then found this on FreeBMD Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Jun 1866 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cains Francis Howden 9d 172 HODGSON Elizabeth Howden 9d 172 SMITH Elizabeth Howden 9d 172 Watson Joseph Howden 9d 172 And then this on Ancestry 1871 Name: Elizabeth Cain Age: 32 Estimated birth year: abt 1839 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: Francis Gender: Female Where born: Holme, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Holme Upon Spalding Moor County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Howden Sub-registration district: Holme ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth Cain 32 Elizabeth Cain 3 months Francis Cain 35 Hannah Jane Cain 2 Thos Cain 8 William Cain 4 John Jackson 28 As you can see, Elizabeth's marriage to Francis is in 1866, but there is a son called thomas listed born about 1863 in HOSM. What do you reckon? Jeanette x

Hi Sarah The East Yorkshire Records Office is currently closed to the public as they are in the process of moving. Don't know if they're taking enquiries over the phone though. But if you haven't found anything by the time they open again next year, I don't mind taking a look at the parish registers for you. Just a thought.....do the witnesses at the marriage give any clue? Could they be family members? Jeanette x

Eliza Hornsey 31 (Wid) (Ag Lab) Charles Hornsey 14 John Hornsey 12 Elizth Hornsey 10 Thomas Hornsey 9 Still checking though. None of the family appear in 1891 or 1881 as Hornsey. Aww.... Thos Hornsey abt 1862 Holme, Yorkshire, England Head Holme Yorkshire Wife Harriet :( Back to drawing board! I have to go back to work now, so I'll have another look tonight.

If there is a line for his father on the marriage cert, it is likely he was illegitimate. It is also possible he was not registered as Hodgson, but with his mothers maiden name. I'll see what I can dig up.

Thanks for the replies. I googled Holme on Spalding moor and the nearest places for registrations in that district were Howden or Market Weighton (if the birth was registered at all!!) I found a birth for a Thomas Hodgson district Howden in Sept qtr 1862 so I have ordered to the cert to see if it tells me anything. I think the only way I will know it's him if Holme on spalding moor is shown as his birth place and the slight chance his father is called Thomas as my Thomas is Thomas jnr in 1901 census! Thanks Again

Sarah, Registration of births wasn't strictly enforced until 1875 so it is possible that he wasn't registered and you won't find a certificate. Sam x

Sarah It might be a help to you if you were to contact the East Riding records office and ask for their opinion as to which district a birth would likely be registered under if someone was born in Holme on Spalding Moor. I think it fell in East Riding part of Yorkshire - but anyway, they will be able to tell you more. There are several birth entries but you need to be able to narrow down the possibilities before ordering any, I think. East Riding of Yorkshire Record Office Champney Road Beverley East Yorkshire Tel: 01482 392790 Also, if you Google you can find some interesting snippets on Holme on Spalding Moor. There was a Union Workhouse there. Just a thought, but if he didn't know his father's name, it could be that his mum had him illegitimately at the workhouse perhaps. Athena

So it's easier to read! Hi, I am looking for the parents of Thomas Hodgson. I have him on the 1901 census in Lund aged 38 so he would have been born in 1862/1863 and it says he was born Holme on Spalding Moor also looks like it calls him Thomas Hodgson Jnr I think. He married Eliza Hardbattle on 17.01.1885 aged 22. So unless he was 22 between the 1st and 17th January he would have been born in 1862. I have their marriage cert but there is just a line where his parents should be. I am really stuck on this and I cannot find him. If I had a few possibilities for births then I will get the birth cert but I can't even find that!! Please Help!!!
