Maybe they went their seperate ways - pre 1926 and he died sometime later. I have a couple that seperated and it was only the fact that he had such an unusual name that I was able to locate his death record. Very best of luck, I'm sure someday you will get that lucky break Pen x |

To try and narrow it down a bit: When was the last child born, and is his father named on the birth certificate? When did his wife die, is she shown as a widow on the cert, and who registered the death? |

BMDs have only been transcribed up to about 1915 (you can look at the FreeBMD and LancsBMD sites to see the exact coverage). The only way of finding deaths after that is to trawl through the images on Ancestry, quarter by quarter, as Penny said in the first reply on this thread. If you don't know the exact year it's going to take hours, which is why I said you need to narrow down the period involved. You can find the images here: http://www.ancestry*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx (replace asterisk with dot) Look at the Complete Index, NOT the Partial Index. You need to register with Ancestry, but it's free to view BMDs - you only have to pay for the censuses. |

Have you thought about looking on the marriage certs of his 9 children? He may have present at a marriage - or it could say whether he was deceased or not. It could at least narrow down the death time frame. |

On the death index there is a Paul David Oakes who dies Sep 1986 dob 21 Oct 1917. The is a corresponding birth reg for OND 1917 West Derby mmn Sacht. BTW the Lancashire BMD site is still adding to the records they have on. |

thanks to everyone concerned........i`ve been on 3 sites today, and thanks to you all,we`ve established that WINNIE was b in 1921....so my g grandfather wasn`t killed in the war.....so lynne.....thank you so much for your info,,,,,,certainly fits the bill for william edwards birth/year of death.....i`ll have to purchase this death certificate ,to see if its my g grandfather.....my father always believed william edward was lost at sea.......doesn`t look like that now.......i`ll keep you informed......and thanks again....it really is appreciated.......regards......allan |
