OC, From the scant knowledge that I have, granddad had a sister, Mary Ellen, but never mentioned he had a brother. Granddad was born, according to him, in December 1874. I have located a Mary Ellen Roberts who was in service in Kirkby, which is the area granddad spoke about. In the 1881 census, GEORGE MASSEY, c1841,Waverton, Cheshire, is a boarder in the home of MARY ROBERTS and her two sons. MARY is listed as head and a LABOURERS WIFE. I am on thin ice I know, assuming these are the right people, but I am at a complete standstill with paternal side of my family. Kathlyn

When was John Roberts/Maudesley born? In other words, was he a child of the marriage, or born before that, in which case he will have his mother's maiden name at registration (always supposing SHE wasnt married before and he was a child of the previous marriage) OC

While I still have half an ounce of grey matter left can someone pleeesssss, suggest any other road I can go down????? Oh deary me where do I start.......here goes, Granddad was JOHN MAUDESLEY, unable to find anything about him other than the 1901 census. Knew more about his stepfather, GEORGE MASSEY than I did about his mother, in fact did not even know her christian name, so guessed it was MARY as she had called her daughter MARY ELLEN. By tracing GEORGE MASSEY, I discovered that he lodged with MARY ROBERTS and her two sons, JOHN and WILLIAM. (Did not even know granddad had a brother) He married MARY ROBERTS in 1894 and I managed to get the info to be able to get a copy of the certificate. On the marriage cert it stated that MARY ROBERTS was nee....MARY MAWDSLEY.......(Have I reached the promised land I said to myself!!!!!) I think I have the reason why granddad took his mothers maiden name. The problem is.....JOHN ROBERTS, which is the name I think granddad was born with, is soooooo common my mind is reeling. On granddads marriage cert, which I have a copy of, he states his father as being, JOHN MAUDESLEY. (spelling changes according to who heard how the name was pronounced) Please, I need some thoughts as to how I can go about sorting this unholy mess. Kathlyn
