Oh, I never thought of Eric lol Guess that's a typo! Ancestry is not a free site, but 1881 and the BMD section are free once you have registered. The rest of the census information has to be paid for by subscription. The other sites are free.

Thankyou - Are they both free websites? The descendant you found Eric J Funnell is actually my Grandad!!!! Claire

You can also search 1881 free, so you should be able to find John with his parents. (I think Ada is a servant) Use familysearch.org or Ancestry. Wish my family were as easy as yours to find lol

His parents are said to be John Edward Funnell and Ada Georgina Burgess (no dates). No I don't have the GRO ref! Claire

You don't /have/ to get all the certs, but they do help - especially marriage and birth ones. To buy one, you need the references - either for the local register office or the General Records Office (www.gro.gov.uk) I guess you have the GRO ref for Edmund in 1896? On a side - who does the 'other' person say are his parents? PS - here's the marriage... Marriage Dec 1918 Funnell, Edmund J Strutt, Hilda M Steyning 2b 694 and a child... Birth Jun 1920 Funnell, Erie J mother - Strutt Steyning 2b 528 I never head that name before - is it right? You can find others on the BMD register, which is free to search on the Ancestry website.

Hi His name is Edmund James Funnell and his DOB is the 06/08/1896. I got his DOB from a fellow family tree but have confirmed for myself that his birth was registered in July, August or September 1986. He was born in Lewes (East Sussex) and married Hilda Strutt (although I am unable to confirm when). I cannot confirm his parent or siblings. A fellow family tree does have a number of siblings for him but I don't know how accurate these are!! When tracing your family tree, should you obtain copies of all birth, marriage and death certificates etc? And if so, how do you go about obaining them? Thanks again Claire

He's probably mis-transcribed. That happens a lot. Of course, if he was from a family of travellers or sea-people, then they may not be there. If you give his name, we can have a look for you.

Without knowing his name, it's difficult to speculate......... Have you found the rest of his family in 1901? Reg

Claire Report 5 Feb 2007 11:55

Thanks for the tips. I have looked at the 1901 Census and found some family on my great-grandmothers side. I know that my great-grandfather was born in Lewes in 1896 - I have seen the record for his birth. However there is no record for him in the 1901 census. Can anybody please explain why. Many thanks Claire

Hi Claire If you have any info re birth and marriages that would take you to the 1901 census you can ask on the records board for a census look up people on here are very helpful. Julie

Type 'newbies' in the search box..........loads of threads offering advice. You have some people in your tree, I see.........so work backwards from them..once you hit 1901, you can look for people on censuses........... Reg
